Disco and funk is coming back, its fitting as this is music of the genX youth...what their parents were playing had in their stash of records as kids.

The decline of rock music in the mainstream coincides with the rise of the internet, social media, and hip-hop/rap music. White people had a stranglehold on pop culture and the internet and platforms like YouTube, ********, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok wrested it from them.
Pop culture has open sourced and splintered into a million sects.
The youth don't **** with rock because it's stiff old white people music. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the only form of white people music that got any play over the last 15 years was country, folk, and indie. These genres are gimmicky enough to come across as cool.
Country is cool because you can put on a big hat and act like an exaggerated stereotype. Folk was co-opted by a lot of surfer types, or those pretending to surf. Indie was the closest thing to rock I guess. Seems to be a nostalgic circlejerk for older eras of rock music. Bands like Sky Ferreira, the Libertines, Digitalism, Arctic Monkeys, Hot Chip, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Cut Copy, Pnau, Justice, Klaxons, Late of the Pier, MGMT, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Rapture, Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, Crystal Castles, Paolo Nutini, Franz Ferdinand, The Walkmen, Razorlight, and The Kooks.
This is one of the biggest modern rock hits from the "Indie Sleaze" genre/era. Came out 9 years ago and has 1.5 billion views:

that's why rock isn't organic. rock is a manufactured music. when you have to explain to someone how they should like a certain music you've already lost the true meaning of good music. it doesn't need to be explained.
this is just manufactured trash

smells like teen spirit was played 24/7 that it got drilled into people's heads. i remember they had talking heads on MTV analyzing why that song was so amazing. literally teaching you to like it. so when the first chord hits, the old heads like myself will actually vibe a bit.
but objectively it's just a guy whining with screams. nobody plays that song to listen to by themselves. they may play it at a party for nostalgia. but that's it.
you don't need any talking heads for songs like this. nobody needs to break down why it's good. nobody needs to break down the instrumentals or vocals or mood. you don't even need to understand the lyrics.
kids come out the womb dancing to this

Think of a social setting other than a concert... like a club or lounge......
under what circumstances would they play chit like this???????

this
become a millionaire with youtube views alone. no money in music lol
face it. Rock simply did not survive against natural selection. I was a 90's kid. you were all brainwashed.

kanye is a boomer and peaked pre iphone
kendrick peaked during the obama admin
drake is old and is riding on the coattails of being popular 10 years ago
same with nicki minaj
most the popular well known rap acts are literally old and only popular for something they did a decade ago
EDM is straight up DEAD. the top well known DJs are late 40s, early 50s lol. actual boomers
the only popular act nowadays is taylor swift lol (who also is riding her popularity pre iphone). the most popular song of this year was an 80s rereleased song (running up that hill)
Lady Gagas Bloody Mary was released 10 years ago and is now topping the charts
people dont like ANY current music. they are just listening to older stuff now. MUSIC IS DEAD(not just rock)

metal is alive and well, btw
specifically metalcore, hardcore, deathcore are all still doing pretty well especially considering how underground those genres were when they started out.
Bands like fit for a king, wage war, Tallah, August Burns Red, and the devil wears prada have been pretty good about using social media to stay relevant. I can name dozens of metalcore and deathcore bands with monthly spotify streams in the millions. It's not top 40 ofc but if anything it has gained popularity since the 90's/2000's as opposed to alt rock which has has very few successful bands the last 15-20 years.

Making money for artists/bands these days is more about touring and using your fame to segue into different avenues. Ideally, you could do music and acting, some TV host/judge **** while being face of fashion brands etc. Harry Styles is basically doing this. Not new, of course - bowie did it, Elvis too.
