That sucks. Their remake of Blue Monday is one of my all time favorite songs. There is an 80s tribute band called Fast Times here in Los Angeles that does it justice. Love it.

Disco and funk is coming back, its fitting as this is music of the genX youth...what their parents were playing had in their stash of records as kids.

The decline of rock music in the mainstream coincides with the rise of the internet, social media, and hip-hop/rap music. White people had a stranglehold on pop culture and the internet and platforms like YouTube, ********, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok wrested it from them.

Pop culture has open sourced and splintered into a million sects.

The youth don't **** with rock because it's stiff old white people music. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the only form of white people music that got any play over the last 15 years was country, folk, and indie. These genres are gimmicky enough to come across as cool.

Country is cool because you can put on a big hat and act like an exaggerated stereotype. Folk was co-opted by a lot of surfer types, or those pretending to surf. Indie was the closest thing to rock I guess. Seems to be a nostalgic circlejerk for older eras of rock music. Bands like Sky Ferreira, the Libertines, Digitalism, Arctic Monkeys, Hot Chip, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Cut Copy, Pnau, Justice, Klaxons, Late of the Pier, MGMT, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Rapture, Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, Crystal Castles, Paolo Nutini, Franz Ferdinand, The Walkmen, Razorlight, and The Kooks.

This is one of the biggest modern rock hits from the "Indie Sleaze" genre/era. Came out 9 years ago and has 1.5 billion views:

arctic monkeys and tame impala are the last BIG rock band srs but its been at least 5-6 years since theyve been peaking

like I said, rock can come back, it just needs to find a new style. 80s hair band rock died in the 90s. grunge died in the 2000s. punk/pop died in the late 2000s. indie rock died in mid/late 2010s.

right now theres nothing. it will come back. arctic monkey were fuarking a big deal for zoomers even....

this is good music. period. high eq.

that's why rock isn't organic. rock is a manufactured music. when you have to explain to someone how they should like a certain music you've already lost the true meaning of good music. it doesn't need to be explained.

this is just manufactured trash

most popular rock song from the 90's.

but objectively it's just a guy whining with screams. nobody plays that song to listen to by themselves. they may play it at a party for nostalgia. but that's it.

you don't need any talking heads for songs like this. nobody needs to break down why it's good. nobody needs to break down the instrumentals or vocals or mood. you don't even need to understand the lyrics.

kids come out the womb dancing to this

face it. Rock simply did not survive against natural selection. I was a 90's kid. you were all brainwashed.
You're dropping some truth bombs, bro. It's hard to face the truth but it's the truth. White people had a stranglehold on pop culture and the internet and social media ****ed that up. Instead of what one group thought was cool, it's now an open market... And the stiffs got exposed.

rap is dying though. name one new rappper in the past few years that has a huge hold on pop culture

kanye is a boomer and peaked pre iphone
kendrick peaked during the obama admin
drake is old and is riding on the coattails of being popular 10 years ago
same with nicki minaj

most the popular well known rap acts are literally old and only popular for something they did a decade ago

EDM is straight up DEAD. the top well known DJs are late 40s, early 50s lol. actual boomers

the only popular act nowadays is taylor swift lol (who also is riding her popularity pre iphone). the most popular song of this year was an 80s rereleased song (running up that hill)

Lady Gagas Bloody Mary was released 10 years ago and is now topping the charts

people dont like ANY current music. they are just listening to older stuff now. MUSIC IS DEAD(not just rock)

metal is alive and well, btw

specifically metalcore, hardcore, deathcore are all still doing pretty well especially considering how underground those genres were when they started out.

Bands like fit for a king, wage war, Tallah, August Burns Red, and the devil wears prada have been pretty good about using social media to stay relevant. I can name dozens of metalcore and deathcore bands with monthly spotify streams in the millions. It's not top 40 ofc but if anything it has gained popularity since the 90's/2000's as opposed to alt rock which has has very few successful bands the last 15-20 years.

yup that arctic monkey song is played all over the radio and yet it still only has 1.5 billion views. That Tyga song is not played on any radio stations. despite that, it's got just as many views. That is the free market choice.

young people know that gucci mane song. you are out of touch. song has 500 million views despite having 0 Mainstream coverage. that's the free market choice. it's just a good tune. no need for any push.

Yeah obviously touring is different - old bands make crazy money. It's them and Taylor Swift and the other pop types like Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Ariana, etc that make bank

Making money for artists/bands these days is more about touring and using your fame to segue into different avenues. Ideally, you could do music and acting, some TV host/judge **** while being face of fashion brands etc. Harry Styles is basically doing this. Not new, of course - bowie did it, Elvis too.
