Indie was the closest thing to rock I guess. Seems to be a nostalgic circlejerk for older eras of rock music. Bands like fit for a king, wage war, Tallah, August Burns Red, and the devil wears prada have been pretty good about using social media to stay relevant. I can name dozens of metalcore and deathcore bands with monthly spotify streams in the millions. It's not top 40 ofc but if anything it has gained popularity since the 90's/2000's as opposed to alt rock which has has very few successful bands the last 15-20 years.

Making money for artists/bands these days is more about touring and using your fame to segue into different avenues.
