The problem is society has misconstrued what racism actually is.

It's normal to prefer people similar to you. That's not racism. Preferring one type of individual over another is not racism but everyone get bent out of shape when you prefer one race over the other calling you a racist.

Real racism is literally going out of your way to do harm in some form or fashion because someone is another race. Saying you like white people more because you have similarities and tend to think more alike isn't racism. You're literally just more compatible with your own race, whether it be as friends, romantic partners, or even coworkers, than you are with other races. On average, we simply share more similar traits, tend to like more of the same things, think the same way, brought up and raised in similar fashions, and as a result interact with one another more seamlessly.

Even showing favoritism isn't racism really. Do you not show favoritism to friends and family over a stranger? Since that's not race related we'll need a new derogatory term to call people who show favoritism to family and friends over strangers. Everyone should be treated equally at all times!!!! Wrong. That's not normal or logical. And you're not racist for showing favoritism to people you see as more compatible and thus tend to lean toward liking more than others.

But no one's feelings can be hurt in 2023. God forbid someone likes another person more than you and is even nicer or more willing to do things for them than they would for you. The horrors of such an atrocity! How will you survive knowing that random person leans toward liking another random person more than you??

Sorry, but the real racism is when you have individuals purposely trying to harm someone else because of their skin color. Anything short of that is not real racism and is fabricated racism by current society.

You can always dig down into deeper levels.

Race is just one level. Whites will feel more comfortable with each other than blacks. But within each of those you'll have further divisions. Southern whites will get along better with each other than Northern whites. Within Southern whites, you may be more partial to someone from your home state than someone from out of state.... or even another step further, your hometown compared to outside your hometown.

All we're talking about is in-groups vs. out-groups. The more someone matches the same in-groups as you the more you will gravitate toward them and like them. Race is one of those, and since it's a visual cue, it's a trait you will use immediately to start classifying those you feel are more compatible to associate with.

We do it with appearance too. When I see another lifter, an actual lifter.... not like the fake lifters of the misc... then I immediately feel a stronger connection to that person than some fat slob. A lot of times I'm disgusted by the fat slob and want nothing to do with them.

Does that mean I'm going to go out and slash the tires of the fat person or take some other harmful action against them? No... I'd just prefer the brah who seems like he may be on the same wavelength as me upon initial impressions seeing that he clearly lifts. It's a comfort thing. I KNOW we have that in common if nothing else.

So when you see a black person and a white person, if everything else about them is the same (the way they dress and anything else you can pick up about them just by looking at them briefly) you'll lean toward feeling more comfortable with the person who is the same race and gravitate toward a conversation with that person over the other race.

None of that is racist. But in 2023, everyone will make sure to tell you that it is.

The word for that is chauvinism. And yes, it is racist. You should work on removing those biases.
