Here's the fault with OP's line of thinking. Anyone who has been taught this would know what to do, anyone who has not, they wouldn't be able to figure it out in a minute like the OP suggests anyone should do. That's not true. These kids learn basic combinations and permutations and then solve these types of problems. Many go on to become top engineers, scientists, and mathematicians. This 9th grader was among the top students of his class in California.These kids do competitions and eventually go on to the math olympiad. They are VERY smart. Much smarter than I was at their age for sure.

Not everyone can do this. I wanted to show just how sharp some of these kids are. These brilliant children would once have been written off as being of "savage people" unworthy of an uneducation. There are millions of such kids out there in India, China, and Africa who are denied the opportunity to shine.

Nobody taught them how to solve this problem. They were taught the basics and used their creativity to figure it out. The ability to recognize how this problem fits into a solvable class of problems they already know requires intelligence.

Yes, you can learn to solve these, as I have, by mastering the relevant mathematics. Then you learn to attack whole classes of problems. But to solve these as a kid is a different thing.

Again, the issue is not with the problem itself, but in not being taught the basics and how the formula works. When I was in 2nd grade - I had difficulty calculating additions and subtractions and had to use pennies, srs. Felt like an idiot, because it didn't make any sense. Then one day the teacher explained the formula and everything sort of clicked. After that I stopped using pennies and began calculating in my head.

By the time I was in middle school I was one of the few students in class who never used a calculator and did all the problems in my head. All because I understood how basic math worked even though I wasn't taught the answers specifically. Same thing with Algebra, the teachers would give me a lower grade because I often didn't show my work and just wrote down the answers, so they assumed I cheated, lol.
