I like it.

I haven't been able to swim as much as I used to though this year. The private pool I swim at had a new fence installed around it. In the past when I swam I'd take the pets out around the pool. They would wander around, chase lizards, watch the birds, and I'd swim. The newly installed fence is different from the old fence in that the pets can squeeze through the larger fence bars. I'll have to figure out a solution to the larger bars if I hope to swim more often.

I'd do a natural pool at home - it's an amazing way to integrate it with your garden / scenery.

Well, I'm not ruling out that this is part of training for a triathlon...but my times are abysmal. Here's the data from my first 1km swim (taken easy, 25m pool, NO kickoffs/launches) in 20 years, lol:

Today's swim:

A huge improvement over mine on Wednesday. I focused a lot more on:

1. Extension
2. Rotation (especially left - I always breathe on the RHS every two strokes and was slacking on the left rotation which meant both my right catch sucked as well as the left raise etc...)
3. Body position - I looked down more - got a new pair of goggles so was more looking down than ahead, and rotating my head (trying) as little as possible to breathe.

It felt a lot easier than the last swim - I shaved a whopping 14 minutes in 2 days and didn't even feel like I was pushing that hard. Though the HRM data says I was.

Can't wait to see what future swims are like - I may even sign up for a training class to really practice freestyle, back crawl, side stroke, butterfly, breaststroke. I want to get the technique back that I had in my teens, dead srs.

Repeat as many times as you can.

The fact that you have perfectly defined distances (lengths) means that you can do all sorts of pace/interval patterns. You don't have to just do LISS.
Coming back to this and for the other swimmers: in a 25m pool isn't the 'flip + huge kickoff' 'cheating' yourself out of a good workout? One guy in the pool was doing this and I swear he did almost half the pool length kicking off and fluttering under the water, then quickly kick off the other side again after barely 'swimming' there.

I come to a dead stop and only lightly kick off on each lap. What I'm trying to do right now is really improve my technique - I have a long way to go for freestyle alone, let alone the other styles. I'd love to have a sick butterfly stroke down too - but trying to take it 'slowly'. Too much too soon is my greatest weakness, has always been true for me.

If you are doing intervals (for cardio in general), you are going flat out for 45-60s then slower for 45-120s rinse and repeat.

You are doing 43 lengths in 44:48, so around a minute per length. For intervals, at this point, you would go flat out for 1 length and then swim slower for 2. The turn wouldn't really factor in.

Sounds right. I think my 'record' for one length is under 40 seconds - it's somewhere in the Garmin data. A shame it can't show my heart rate until I get out of the water (I'm wearing the swim HRM in the water, it uploads after).

Any suggestions for a 'cool down'? After that last one when I pushed out of the water and stood up I felt a bit 'woozy' for a few seconds. Maybe it'd be a good idea just to tread water gently for a few minutes to get my heart rate down?

That's your blood pressure dropping. Just get out of the water slower.

It's the same principle as going from lying down to standing up very quickly: you can get light headed.

That worked today thanks.

Did 1km in about 38 minutes so shaved off a bit more. I am still effectively practicing my stroke.

Question: should my neck feel tired? It is almost as if my head feels a bit heavy and I am super sensitive to my posture as well (it is way better in a few weeks already).

Once my technique improves I'll start really pushing. Bet I can do a lap much much faster than my current times.

Been practicing this along with a large 'changelog' - in particular, rotation, breathing, insertion, extension, pull. I can hit a 1:20ish/100m pace when I try, and I'm sure I have technique improvements to make.

Now, if I could maintain that pace for 1km - heck, if I could do almost 3km in 30 minutes that'd be wild. So glad I got back into swimming.

I have been seriously practicing my technique and gotta say, what I need to do is boost the power in my 'catch'. I actually got DOMS (a different kind...) from pushing super fast in my last swim. I felt the DOMS in my upper body workout today and it didn't really affect my workout - stamina though yeah.

For freestyle I need a way to push significant amounts of water underneath me. Any lifters /swimmers here PLEASE help me with exercises. Funnily it is my triceps that feel the most sore, especially where they 'attach' at my shoulder. Reps for any gurus helping me understand how to get super good.

Times are getting better. I think I shaved almost 20 minutes off my first attempt weeks ago.

RPE on this one was about a 7? I'm tempted to do an "all out 1km race" to see just how fast I can do a 1km.

Feeling way better after a few weeks - can't wait to see how fast I smash a 1km in a few months.

Used to swim all of the time and even swam across the Mississippi River before. I just realized though I wasn’t doing it right. I see these guys swimming lap after lap and I guess it’s because I’m older I can’t relax and do that. I go full speed the entire time. You are supposed to breathe in through your mouth and out through your nose in te water and it’s hard for me to flip and do the push off but I want to work at it.

I used to swim a lot.

Rowing and running are better for weight loss but obviously running is more high impact.

Swim if you are not a bloatloard.

Technique matters a lot man. I hadn't gone swimming (bar a bit in an ocean / sea on vacation) properly in over 20 years. When I got back in it *sucked*. A few tutorials on YT and my form is a lot better in freestyle - I don't do the flip/push off because I'm only in a 25m pool (I might for full 50m...) and I want to practice my strokes above all else.

Once my technique is solid, then comes all the power effort really, I don't want to learn bad form. For example, my left side catch is a lot weaker than my right, so trying to address that. Somehow remembered the 'push' should include your hand going backwards past your hip - from lessons decades ago.

Much to learn!

I have a concept 2 but found getting my form right tricky- symptoms like tennis elbow arose.

With swimming I feel much more loose, if that makes sense. I love it!

On the front page, check in time.

About to go jump in.

Did a mile and half straight yesterday, doing the same again today.

Work has been a little busy so I am only making it like three times a week. Next week I should be able to get in more time and I will start incorporating sprints and medium length/higher intensity work outs.

Still feels good af man. Just turn my brain off for an hour and swim. I only think about the lap that I am on and ensuring my form is correct, and that I am actually trying and not just going into autopilot.

What a relaxing break from the day.

I find surfing is better, OP. Paddling on the gives you cardio benefits and light lat workout, plus springing to your feet on a board when catching a wave is good for upper body, demands a bit of upper body strength.

Plus, it's just friggin' fun.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

Honestly it feels so good. I'm still working on technique - in that last 1km I did do a '100m race' but the data must be wrong as it was under a minute which isn't possible for me seriously lol. I'm using a Garmin Forerunner 935 with the worn heart rate monitor. Get the feeling some of the lap measurements are slow/wonky.
