The rational side of me says once you shot them and they went down, you shouldnβt drag one off camera and execute them.
But, I would also approve of laws where if someone broke into your home you should be able to do anything to them. Thieves, and specifically robbers, are trash and deserve to be hanged and disemboweled.
But if such a law existed then you could theoretically have cases where someone baited someone into their home and then raped them or something.

My take:
1. If someone breaks into my house brandishing a weapon (knife, gun, baseball bat) I am entitled to use lethal force to neutralize that person's threat.
2. The very 'breaking into my house' is a threat to my peace and security; the weapon shows malicious intent.
3. Therefore, I could pick up my weapon of choice, wait until the person comes around a corner, and shoot them, aiming for the easiest target to hit (the chest), with (e.g.,) my Benelli M4 tactical shotgun.
After I hit the person I'd wait until they were incapacitated, then approach cautiously and remove their weapon. If they try to aim the weapon at me or reach for it I'll shoot again.
I remove their weapon, when the threat is neutralized I - then and only then - call medical services.
Just to check: are some ITT saying that the above is a 'sociopath'? I have a wife and a nearly 4 month old baby girl at home. I think sometimes Europlebs forget just how much violent crime takes place in the USA, and why things like 'castle doctrine' are held so dear.
Now on this case, the guy tortured/videotaped whatever - sicko. But in my example above if he had done the same thing he would've been completely fine.

Kids break into his house on Thanksgiving day. He shoots them. They die. He doesn't want to ruin first responders Thanksgiving by having them taken from their families to deal with the mess.

Are you glossing over the fact that he was making sarcastic remarks, shot them execution style after incapacitating them and they didn't have weapons, and hid the bodies and didn't report their deaths until the next day?
If he had handled it how you outlined it, that would have been perfectly fine and justifiable. Unfortunate, but reasonable. You even said so in your last sentence that he's a sicko and handled it wrong, so idk why you present a completely different scenario, and then ask why we think he's a sociopath lol.

Distinction is clear once the threat has been neutralized you canβt walk up and execute them. Call 911. Keep them at gun point if they go for a weapon shoot.

Should have stuck with the shots to the torso, waited a few minutes (5 hours), then called 911.

Can you imagine how crazy you'd start going if you had come home to find your home burglarized several times within a few months, and with no end in sight? Once you think of it in those clear-cut terms, you start to wonder how he didn't do something even sooner.

The jury let their emotions dictate their decision.
you never record a defensive shooting, or a fight for your life. Watching a violent act like that is too much for most people. Instead focusing on the law, they end up letting the violence distract them. This is the greatest fault of the left. Too much emotion.
The jury seems to have ignored the fact that the shooting itself was legit. Not reporting it was his only crime here.
Lastly, I bet the crime in that area dropped significantly after this. He did his community a favor. Those thugs were likely committing 75% of the crimes in that area

I found the audio recording...
https://mikitabrottman.com/wp-conten...yron-Smith.mp3
And apparently he did not report any of the burglaries except for one a month before incident, so to say that cops didn't help was bull****.

I agree that most of the criminals that get killed wont be missed and their departure makes the world a better place, but how a civil society behaves is equally important to maintain that civil society. Dragging people into closet and executing them are not people I want living my community. God forbid my kid runs on a lawn to chase down a football and loner Grandpa comes out firing a shotgun.
Let's look at this rationally.
Smith (the murderer) is a 64 year old man, retired government worker, decorated war veteran of the vietnam war, and lives alone in a tiny ass town in Minnesota (population of ~10k). Smith likely has PTSD. Smith has been the victim of numerous burglaries-reportedly at least half a dozen times- in the preceding few months (Police investigation found evidence that it may have been more).
Being that Little Falls is such a tiny town, I doubt their law enforcement forensics are exactly top notch, so obviously Smith is frustrated that the police really can't do anything.
So Smith, probably paranoid from his PTSD, probably pissed that he's being repeatedly victimized, decides to do something about it. Smith visits his neighbors and sees what he thinks are some people casing his house, probably to make Smith a victimyet again.
And he was right. So he ambushed and killed those two schmucks. They were not just victimizing Smith, they were victimizing the whole town. They saw a 64 year old man who lived alone and thought "easy target". They were predators that preyed on the weak. Not some "kid running onto a lawn to chase down a football".
Kifer (the female) was already under investigation for stealing prescription drugs. Evidence found in the vehicle Kifer and Brady used in the commission of BREAKING AND ENTERING into this elder's home linked BOTH of them to ANOTHER burglary in their small town, also targeting an elderly, retired teacher (https://www.startribune.com/slain-te...-in/181119611/). I guarantee you they didn't just start their crime spree then and there--that's just what they got caught for.
They didn't belong in civil society. Grandpa was no threat to anyone except for the dirtbags that preyed on what they thought were easy marks.
