There's usually just not that much oversight into government budgets/contracts. That's why its so important to prosecute these crimes harshly, because the likelihood of getting caught isn't high, so the punishment needs to be ramped up to deter criminals from taking advantage

These two sisters here in South Carolina were selling basic hardware like screws and nuts and bolts to the military for like ten grand a piece. At one point she charged half a million dollars to the taxpayer for a single elbow pipe. They did it for years and eventually only got caught cause of something stupid

They were going to throw the book at them, but one of them killed herself before she went to prison (srs)

Sentencing grandma to 9 years for stealing chicken wings is ridiculous. Especially when white-collar crooks get way less for worse. Good on him.

Being in a trusted position to manage food contracts on behalf of the public school system and then abusing that trust to defraud the government of over a million dollars doesn't seem harsh to me, what do you think would be a fair sentence?

lol wat? She stole $1.5 million worth of chicken, not a couple boxes of Banquet chicken from the grocery store. She definitely deserves jail time. Also lol @ Chris Jones wasting his money trying to get a criminal granny out of jail.

LMAO

she tried to scheme the system and got caught for being greedy
One does not simply just 'drive a truck' to pick up chicken from the depot when the amount of chicken is 750,000 pounds.

With a Chevy 1500 which has a payload of 2260lbs, minus her weight and random chit, you're looking at a balance of 2000lb payload. That's 375 FULLY loaded trips to the chicken depot.

For anyone that cares, that's about 1.875mm chickens assuming an average weight of 3oz per wing. Almost 2 million chickens were killed for her embezzlement.

She did it over years, it wasn't a one time thing

She was almost certainly reselling the chicken wings to restaurants, but I don't think they were able to prove what she was doing with the wings

At this point, “taxpayer” is the wrong title for government funding.

Any amount over budget goes in to the deficit, which is like $2 Trillion, now, after the $4 Trillion in taxes. They’re not likely to tax more to make up for it and will just use inflation to pay.

I understand that. I'm just illustrating just how much chicken this was. I don't care if it was over 10 years, that's still 37 trips a year to this mysterious chicken depot. That's a ton of commitment…and CLEARLY not working alone.

Your not wrong, but I don't think that makes it any better. I'd argue inflation is a form of a tax, and a regressive one at that

Just blows my mind how people can just be OK with this kind of crime and rationalize it away as just "granma took some chicken wings home, whats the big deal", as if there aren't victims. Meanwhile property taxes are hurting the average family's budget and yet the school system still can't afford to pay for decent teachers, have moldy ass buildings without AC, etc

For sure, I would wonder if someone approached her and helped arrange all the stuff or something. And she was just the one with the "credit card" so to speak maybe. AFAIK they don't know exactly what all was going down with the wings. It's probably somewhere there in the court docs

I bet she sold it off to local restaurants, not sure what else she could have done with it. Maybe some Korean grocers would buy some as well?

That's part of the reason she was caught, the school doesn't typically order food with bones in it, and also she went $300,000 over the schools budget.

FUN FACT: Cheese is the most expensive ingredient on pizzas. Its called white gold. dominos is the largest buyer of cheese in the country and gets a huge discount via the dairy industry (allowing them to have a comp edge over others). Same with Papa Johns and all the big boys.

wouldn't be surprised if a cheesy theft-story comes up in the future.
