If you blow up your gun with something like a double charge reload, the gun will be the least of your worries. I shot IDPA with a guy who did his reloads while drinking. It caught up to him. Double charged load in a round during a match. Had melted brass all over his arms, hands, neck, etc. Was a miracle it missed his face.

Basically, don't reload unless you're meticulous.

It had been CLP break free 25 years ago when I stuck it in a box and forgot about it, but now it's goo so I use it on a bore snake to clean barrels. Dripped some where it shouldn't have been and like an idiot, I figured I'd just add some spray on Hornady lube on it to liquify it so I could wipe it off. What I actually did was push some into the striker channel.

But even if it was my fault, there were no failure to fire on 200 rounds of the Callaway ammo or on a couple of mags of Federal. If I have no issues with the remaining boxes I'll order from them again. Good ammo, good prices, and good customer service. Also veteran owned.


Great to hear, I've only been ordering from them since June and this was the first time I have seen they were out of ammo.

I will be using them for the foreseeable future unless they remain out of stock.

Depending on the powder you are using, the cartridge you are loading, there are loads where the powder is half or less than half of case volume (especially lighter loads intended to game competitions)

Also people not paying enough attention might stuff the bullet down right into the powder and unknowingly create a compressed load (with a double charge of powder)

You guys know I’ve used a Dillon press since the 90s. But I’ve also consulted multiple reloading manuals whenever coming up with a new load.

I guess from my perspective, I was just thinking that if I accidentally hit the powder dump a second time, there would be gunpowder all over my press and my bench since most of my loads are chosen using a powder and a charge that fills at or near the base of the bullet when it is seated.

Some people, aware of all the things, intentionally choose only loads where that would happen.

Other people aren't as smart or cautious as all that

Since the topic of light loads came up, the light competition loads for my handgun uses 3.5 grains of Bull’s-eye powder. 4 grains of Bull’s-eye is pretty much all that will fit into the case. If I tried to dump seven grains of powder in, most of it would just end up all over my work area.

ackchually 3 grains spilled would be less than most of 7.

Ever had trouble with one of your reloads? I've never had a failure to fire. I did have a 30-06 that had a smaller chamber than my other 30-06. If I fired cases in the smaller chamber that had previously been fired in the larger chamber and only neck sized they would get stuck. I have backed loads off a few tenths several times when I decided my load was a bit hot. Not often though, I always start conservative and work up using a chronograph.

I was at the range once with a buddy and he thought he had a misfire, but when he examined the case, he realized he somehow forgot to prime it.

I’ve never had trouble with any rifle rounds that I reloaded.

But I have messed up pistol rounds a few times. All of them on the Dillon press, and all of them operator error due to reloading hundreds of practice rounds at a time and brain farting.

All of the failed pistol rounds were due to having some sort of work stoppage (such as running out of primers), getting out of the order of operation, and failing to dump powder in a case.

Over the years, I probably had half a dozen rounds without powder that the primer had enough force to push the bullet out into the barrel, and it stopped there. When that happens, you take a small wooden dowel, and tap the bullet back out of the barrel.

I still keep a small wooden dowel and mallet in my pistol bag when shooting mass quantity reloads. I haven’t had it happen in a very long time, though.

I've come close to leaving out powder several times and for similar reasons. Always caught it so far, though. I could see it being particularly easy on a turret or progressive press. Most of my reloading was done a single stage doing one operation at a time. My close calls have all been in the last several years after picking up a turret. You just get cruising pulling the lever, then something bumps you off pattern…

Get a 5.56 and then a CMMG Bravo .22 LR kit. I have one they are pretty good.

If it's a .22lr it's not really an "AR-15". It could be that style rifle I suppose. (not that any of them are actual AR-15's but we know what you mean)
