really tempted to sell my aqua terra and buy an explorer 36 from the mid-2000s (114270) as my one-watch collection (excluding my g-shock)

the new explorer 36 would be nice too but considering that i've been on my local AD's "waitlist" for that and the OP36 for literally a year now i'm not getting my hopes up lmao

The sad part is that I like the rest of the design. I think the two tone bracelet is fine, and I like the gold bezel. If the dial were white or blue, it would be a definite go.

The AD tried to sell me a DJ41 with fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet, rhodium dial (perfect watch) but fuking diamond indices. I actually loved the rest of the watch, so I ended up buying one with a wimbledon dial from eBay shortly afterwards (srs) but the ADs aren't going to sell you the good datejusts generally, they will try to sling you the chit they can't give away

Jelly of the people who get offered desirable datejusts. I show up to the AD and can't even suck their dick for anything decent so I don't even try (srs) grey market for life

I am still surprised at how I lucked out with my DJ41 fluted jubilee blue with sticks. But now I can’t even get on a fukkin list from that AD for anything else. Keep saying “customers with a history are given priority on certain pieces.” Bitch I have at least SOME history, and I would like to make MORE history if you give me the chance. I’m not gonna buy any of your other chit, but I will spend tens of thousands of dollars if given the chance.

My US watchmaker can take care of it; he does excellent work for very reasonable prices. He's done 300+ watches for me over the years, lots of Rolex as well. He can replace crown and crystal and service it. Just shoot him a message and tell him kaba sent you https://www.instagram.com/cltimeworks/

Rolex/AD's won't service any 4 digit references. Only possible in Switzerland, and even then they will refuse many. Better get it done by a competent independent.

looks like a solid $600-1200 watch

a $50,000 Hamilton Khaki auto? lolz

And good pass on that linuxbruh. The AD making the comment on engraving makes me kinda skeptical though, knowing how anal Rolex is about "mods."

lol interesting. I wonder if this will be the longstanding sentiment. I remember crucifying the ALange Odysseus when that came out but it definitely grew on me. I like it as a patek offering because they don't have a single non-sports casual watch outside of the weekly calendar. But absolutely giving "field watch" vibes. Also pretty sure msrp is just over 30k unless i'm mistaken.

I think it's worth an attempt, although i'd be careful going into an AD and saying your two desired pieces are an OP36 or the daydate. It just sounds like "I want either your cheapest model, or most expensive model. Whichever one i can flip"

I'll have to swing through my local AD and get a feel for what the market is like. I'd imagine things have cooled off substantially since this time last year. I have a business trip to japan next month, thinking of picking up the SBGM221 before i go. Just to test the sentiment of wearing a Grand Seiko over a Rolex in a native japanese business envrionment.

are you crazy??? alot of people hate my mentality on lux. watches….. but if you are willing to spend $2k+ on a watch ,then you can spend atleast $10k to $15k on a long lasting piece

never throw $$$$ on any time piece that is less than <$10k

I'm one of the snobbiest people i know, and think this is the worst watch take i've read in a very long time.

- I'll put the initial blame on myself. I certainly made it sound like i was nonchalantly throwing 3.5k on a random piece but that's not the case. I've always admired the SBGM221, and its been on my shortlist of wants for awhile now. I have the "statement piece" two tone datejust41, I've got the sporty steel tudor chronograph, but I have nothing that falls into the bonafide dresspiece category. I've even been on record saying I don't think i could ever truly justify buying a patek or Alange because my dress would rarely permit even wearing them. In my opinion this GS is the best leather strap piece not just under 30k but 20k as well (JLCs being the only ones that could even start to compare)

- "If willing to spend over 2k on a watch, you can at least spend 10 to 15k?" I don't think i've ever read a spread like that. I wouldn't make a statement regarding a $10,000 difference being negligible unless i was looking at pieces at the $30,000+ price point.

- "Never throw money at any time piece that is less than 10k" is just ignorant. Why because it'll be a waste of money? I could see if I was talking about buying a $1,500 shinola, daniel wellington, or some Belmont piece, but i encourage you to search for SBGM221s on chrono24 and watch recon. You will not find a single piece new or used listed under $3,000. The value retention of this particular piece rivals higher-end swiss because most people that know watches see the value proposition of the piece. the SBGM221 is pure sex AND it's a GMT.

idk, i like my aqua terra a lot but it's just not getting much wrist time, plus i have the new watch and rolex itch lol. besides the aqua terra i also have a vintage omega and a seiko diver, and i'm thinking of selling all 3 of those and consolidating to a one-watch collection

nice, grand seikos are gorgeous! and yeah the market for rolex has definitely cooled off but i think there's still more to go. even my cousin who has a substantial rolex collection told me to hold off for the next couple of months since the market might go down further.

i'm just waiting for this recession to finally hit so i can buy a house and a rolex at a decent price lmao

He said “long lasting”, which I think deserves a little bit of elaboration. 10-15k may be his benchmark for when a watch is worth being an heirloom or something. People set those all over the place depending on where they are financially. Personally, my benchmark is much lower.

I’m on the list for the GMT on jubilee. In either bezel colors. I’m figuring to wait a long time.

picked up an apple watch series 7 the other day because the always on display intrigued me.

turns out, the seconds hand doesn't stay on longer than 5 seconds. what a joke, false advertising

if by "long lasting" he means durability, then a g-shock has every other watch beat.

even if he's talking about a watch being worth it as an heirloom that's still wrong, because there are plenty of watches under $10k MSRP that would make great heirlooms. datejust, submariner, gmt master, certain omegas, etc.

saying that buying any watch between $2k and $10k is throwing money away is an objectively garbage take

Years ago, my dad gave me two watches that belonged to his dad.

One was a gold 1950s hooded lug Seamaster. It's worth roughly $8k right now, runs fantastic, and will be passed to my son one day.

The other was a stainless 1950s Gruen automatic watch. It's worth roughly $300 right now. It runs fantastic after service and will be passed to my son one day.

Unless you're buying truly crappy quartz watches or stuff with cheap plating that's going to wear off, almost anything can be an heirloom.
