I've read some reviews and I see a lot of people saying to go for sigma or tamron instead but then the other half of people saying the nikkor is really sharp and a great wide zoom.
Thoughts?
dont know too much about the lens or the prices of the alternatives, but im partial to nikon myself and 10-24 would be a great range to go really wide or long wide. if the alternatives are significantly cheaper then maybe do that, and spend on expensive lenses when you get either a D500 or full frame.

Went snowboarding in CO this weekend…after I ran out of juice I decided to ride the gondola to the top at Keystone and take a picture before the sun disappeared.

I used the Nikon 10-24mm, and use it for a good 80% of my pictures in general. My 50mm is tricky to use, am going to swap it for 35mm one day. The other lens I have is a 70-300mm which isn't bad, but will upgrade it eventually as well, something with a 500mm would be nice.

I got the 10-24mm used off Ebay for $500 USD

I also found a good price on the Nikon 12-24 F4 DX , I see that people say the 12-24 is a more "professional" lens but I think i'd prefer the wider angle on the 10-24.

Have you had an experience with the 12-24?

Thanks. I took this at Len Foote Hike Inn at the foot hills of the Appalachian.

If I were you, I wouldn't be so concerned with "professional." Use what works for the job. Did you see what I shot my two landscapes with? lol

Lets you get close to the subject without getting in their face, and good for wildlife at the long end.

I've flirted with the idea of the Tamron 16-300 as a walkaround lens for a while. The IQ isn't going to be as good as a prime, or a smaller range zoom, but it might be okay. Or it might not… It's gone down in price a good bit since it came out so I might get one for the summer. Or I might not… Any photobrahs have any experience of using this, or similar?

The issue isn't the focal length range available. It's the apertures that the lens is capable of that's a bit limiting on those super-zooms. I bought a 18-140 for my Nikon thinking the same thing, but it's just not fast enough a lot of the time…. I switched to carrying a 35mm and an 85mm prime most days on my crop and a 28mm & 85mm with the full frame…

well here she is!

Showed up today. Now I just have to figure out which lens I want to start with. Some of you may know and some may not. This is my very first camera. I plan to do macro, landscape, cars, portraits, and pretty much everything else I can shoot! So excited

Nice! I'm still working with a point and shoot. I can't wait to upgrade. Were you doing a lot of pictures with a point and shoot before upgrading?

No, sir! Only camera I've used was a cell phone. I have A LOT to learn. I actually caught a lot of heat from some friends because I bought the D750 for a first camera. The way I see it is buy once cry once. Nothing wrong with a point and shoot that's for sure.

The key to getting the most out of this gear is to be able to operate it in the dark without looking at buttons and dials — it becomes automatic.

Anyway above all enjoy the learning process. All this gear and technical stuff is only a means to an end. Spend time planning trips to interesting locations and organizing shoots with interesting subjects while trying to learn as much as you can and you'll quickly build up a nice gallery of work.

Thank you! I did a lot of research on the 700 and watched a lot of videos on it. Great camera of course. I'm eager to learn and ready to have fun with it

Yup. Sun was just rising but not quite over the tall spruce tree line.

ISO800 is what my max usually is with 7dmkii.

Usually I never shoot at f6.3, but didn't have a choice. Shutter speed was also 1/200th or 1/180th. Was using a monopod and watched the guy for 2 hours. Was also reasonably close to it.

Anyone have any recommendations for a diffuser/bounce I can use in an open space? I finally got a native Flash gun for my camera. I've been trying to do some research but haven't really come up with anything.

I'm trying to prep for the conventions this year round and want to be able to light up cosplayers nicely since it's an open air convention center and the light is ever changing.

This is the exact same set up I'm going to have:

Sto-Fen diffusers work. From the pic you posted, the Omni Bounce OM-EW is what fits. Or you could go all out and get a Gary Fong setup, but those can be more of a hassle than anything. Whatever works.

Always fighting for more like with the Tamron, Wish I didn't have the 60D at the moment so that I could at least boost the ISO, how do you like the 7D2 with that combo? hows the high iso performance?

Nikon 85mm 1.8 for a first lens…what do you guys think??

It's for my Nikon D750

I've had several people tell me it's a good lens since I'm just starting out.

What's a good Macro lens? That's what I really want to get into.

Tamron makes solid macro lenses, I'd recommend them, they're usually really cheap too.

85mm prime is a solid lens for headshots, Ideally if you go the prime route, you want three to cover wide, mid, and tele. So you're looking at a 24/35mm, 50mm, and 85/135mm If you want just a walkaround lens to keep on all the time prime-wise, I'd choose a 35 or 50m.

fantastic lens.
for just starting out it is more than you need, but if you can swing it, get it. I loved mine, until i moved to a 1.4 version.

as to the macro, I absolutely adore my 105mm 2.8.

The 1.4 would be overkill for me and my bank account. Would love to have it though since it's pretty much the best.

I'll have to look into the 105mm 2.8.

I ordered the 85mm and it will be here Saturday!

Trying to stay calm about the potential Scotland trip next May, but already have the 6 days 90% planned out, if there are any bros from over there, I would appreciate a local's input on the trip. Working on a shot list to help past the time, will need to learn how to photograph the northern lights in case there are any while we are there, work on some HDR a bit more. .I thought bracketing would take multiple shots at the exposure difference you set it at, but it doesn't seem to, so what's the point of it over just manually adjusting iso on different shots?

Also looking back, my largest self-critique is lack of tack sharp focus, I'm sure it's user error? Most of the shots are the Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 but also sport a 50mm f/1.8 and 70-300 f/4.5-5.6,

www.500px.com/chadberens

Coming up with a list of lenses I'd like to upgrade to, would like one or more come trip time, but a wedding, laser engraver, xbox one are sort of competing for the wallet as well.

Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3

Would like a 35mm over the 50mm, Nikon has a 35mm f/1.8 that I would likely buy, however I am contemplating spending a bit more and replacing the 10-24mm as my current landscape lens, with the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4.

Shot with the D7100.

3rd and last shot are great, maybe in the last shot shop it to have solid black background? Looking closer I notice some shapes.

Also looking back, my largest self-critique is lack of tack sharp focus, I'm sure it's user error? Most of the shots are the Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 but also sport a 50mm f/1.8 and 70-300 f/4.5-5.6,

Looking closer I notice some shapes.
thanks for feed back, still learning to use PS was using light room and was making it black with the touch up brush haha, fixed it now tho

on another tip, fooking LOL i just saw Lee has a new SUPER Stopper, 15-stop ND filter. maybe im late to this here, but its the first time im seeing it. just LOL. the Big Stopper is plenty dark, even too dark, at 10-stops if you shoot at golden and blue hour.
