Yahoo isn't the pinnacle of great decision making lol. Pretty sure these retards had a chance to buy MSFT or GOOGL in the 2000's and said no thx jeff.

Matter of fact, their best decision was investing in BABA before they went full retard and hired a female CEO to blow up their company.

Them capitulating here might actually be a good sign for BABA dead srs

So, if Amazon did a 4-1 split, would Amazon quadruple the following year?

I think being a savvy investor now means reading the audience.

these companies aren't offering dividends. what's the point of owning stock at all? speculation.

I'd argue against dividends for all stock.

The tax disadvantage of dividends against compounding is obscene over a 10-20 Year span.

Absolutely, just defining possible motivations. I'm not an expert in any capacity. Just aware of why I am here and that there are a lot of others like me.

Stock adoption rate has been the sole generator of wealth from investment for a lot of people. Pretty incredible.

Imagine if those dividends were instead held inside the company, re-invested tax free for further growth, and the dividend you had to pay tax on was instead logged as a capital gain, tax-free…

Spread that over 10 years, and you have dizzying amounts of gains you've missed by collecting dividends.

You’re not wrong, I started investing last March, originally I just wanted to beat the rate I was getting on my savings, I set the bar really low lol. This year I set my goal for returns 5x higher than last year and I’ve already reached my goal for the year. Next year I think I’ll be more growth centric.

Are you saying stock adoption rate/more people buying stock is the reason for stock price appreciation? Amazon and Alphabet have grown their stock price without ever paying a dividend based entirely on earnings growth. Amazon trades at a lower P/E multiple than they have in the past several years. There are a lot of companies that do not pay a dividend but still grow earnings at 20% CAGR. Whether a company pays a dividend or not is a reflection of that company's business model, capital structure, free cash flow from operations, growth outlook, capital expenditure profile, etc. As long as a company can grow earnings, whether those earnings are paid out to shareholders today or not, their stock price should increase. Earnings today might be paid out as dividends five years from now… or they might not. Either way, it doesn't matter to the investor - return is return (whether it is from share appreciation or dividends)

Don't fall into the dividend trap where you think an investment only has "value" if the company pays dividends to shareholders… you will only limit your returns that way

Companies not offering dividends now could very well begin offering them in the future when they continue maturing and running out of growth opportunities. Traders and funds etc don't need to sit on speculative growth stocks in their line of work, but early investors can benefit from the speculation and stock price appreciation by sitting on unrealized gains and funding their lifestyles with loans against their investments while waiting for these companies to eventually begin offering dividends at what would be a huge % relative to their initial investment.

Aside from dumping a company you built, return of capital through profits generated by the company is how you make money as a real businessperson. Build company, provide product/service in exchange for $$$ while incurring costs, hopefully make a profit, and pay yourself out of that profit. If you're more focused on growth, chances are you won't be paying yourself much and it's the same idea with publicly traded companies but on a larger scale.

100% of my income nowadays is dividends because I own an incorporated company through which I invoice other companies, and then I pay myself in dividends from my company

RIVN valuation is going to be high around 50-60B but I bet it will get closer to 80 out the gate. Anything EV has soared the past year and this one is backed by Amazon and Ford. If I can get in early, it’s on.

Made a $708 play this morning.

Woke up, saw that this stock, which I never heard of, was blowing up today. Stared at the trend and it just wouldn't stop moving up. Bought in at ~$9.50, got a shower, and then once the shower was over I decided to sell at ~$11. Probably could've gotten as much as $12-$12.50/share out of it, but ah well.

I call that a "golden shower."
