My larger thoughts on the game last night.
I thought overall we played fantastic, although the opponent may not have been great. That said we played disciplined football with no penalties, and everybody pre snap was on the same page on getting set quickly on both sides of the ball. That was nice to see. I enjoyed that we didn't get any penalties when things got escalated and we remained cool and let the Rams beat themselves a bit. My biggest concern discipline wise was fumbles. Draughn had one where we were moving downfield and almost gave up momentum, and Patton had two fumbles that luckily bounced out of bounds. Need to get a grip on those fumbling issues, they were prevalent in preseason as well.
I loved the play of both fronts. OL and DL played very well and outside of a bad 3rd quarter the OL handled a strong DL opponent. Defensively I loved that we stuffed the run and had pressure on the QB (even without Lynch) a big positive IMO. As well we gang tackled and the linebackers and secondary looked quick to the ball. Would love to see more of that. Offensively the OL seems to be miles ahead of last year, Blaine was protected and the run game was effective for the most part. Chip's offense is predicated on getting that first first down and keeping the offense moving along high speed after that, a good OL will help that a bunch.
Kerley was a big positive at WR and looked very comfy catching punts, good to see there. My biggest issue really was Gabbert's inaccuracy and telegraphing some short throws, like 3-4 got batted down and nearly picked and he almost threw 3-4 picks on other throws. He also missed Kerley wide open early. Along with that he still threw short of the sticks a few 3rd downs. I know partially there is issues with getting everyone on the same page in game 1 and the offense will gel as they play more but overall he needs to be a bit better if we want to reach that "next level." He did enough to win last night but against tougher opponents more of the load will be on him to perform well as a passer.
Going forward we can't have a repeat of last year in game 2. The situation is the same but the team IMO has a much better chance to be competitive as we can learn from last year and IMO we are coached much better this year. I want to see us win obviously and shock everyone but ultimately being competitive will be huge.
At this point we are 1-0 with a division win and after 1 game it's where we want to be. Overall happy and excited for week 2. Also glad no injuries to speak of so far which is big.

Here is my report card from last night
QB: C+, Gabbert’s third quarter was brutal. Take away the 3rd quarter and he played ok though. Didn’t take any unnecessary sacks so that’s a plus. He read the field from what I saw but like Steve Young said he seemed hesitant to throw into traffic at times. I criticized Alex Smith for doing the same thing and praised Kap for taking shots so I must be fair. I guess as long as you connect on those shots like Kap did early on in his career its cool but I’m sure it would be a different story if they didn’t connect and they turned into turnovers.
RB: A-, Hyde is a monster. Sure he didn’t break 100 but not a lot of teams will with that Rams front 7. Draughn played well too despite the fumble.
WR: B, Kerley is the real deal in the slot. Patton played ok and had a key block as well. Smith was kinda lost. It’s obvious we don’t have a #1 receiver but we all knew that coming into the season.
TE: B-, other than Vance’s touchdown they really weren’t too noticeable other than there blocking which looked good.
OL: A+, this was refreshing. They all played great from what I saw especially considering against one of the best dlines in football.
Overall all offensive grade B-
DE: A+, Dial really had himself a good game. Armstead got a sack and Bucknew flashed. Heck even saw Blair make some disruptions.
DT: A, hard to tell what a DT impact is in a 3-4 but Purcell did seem to make some plays. Can’t really find any fault with him
OLB: B+, Brooks still is one of our most consistent players. I looked for Tank last night and every time I saw him he was in coverage which isn’t his strong suit but he looked ok.
ILB: A++, Bowman is back. Ray Ray had a nice pick and a good hit a few times. Ray Ray might be our best guy next to Bowman. Not sure if Wilhiote even played ILB last night
CB: A, they really played great last night. Rams are like us in the WR category so take it for what its worth. Both Ward and Brock played excellent. Robinson got some valuable playing time as well. This is Baalke’s group so I expect good things from them as a whole.
S: A, They didn’t give up hardly any big plays. Reid looked good. Tartt looked good on ST
Overall defensive grade A++ for the shutout!!!
Some interesting stats:
49ers converted all 4 red zone attempts into touchdowns. WOW
Offense registered 28 first downs last night. Doesn’t seem like it but WOW
Only 2 penalties last night
Held the Rams to only 185 total yards!!!
Ahmad Brooks tied Dana Stubblefield for 3rd place in franchise history for sacks

However I loved seeing the lack of penalties, of course being at home helped but it shows that the team is well coached. Won't always be this way but you could tell the team was prepared for the game. Hopefully it's a recurring trend moving forward.

At this point we know absolutely nothing about the 2016 49ers thanks to a week 1 schedule that included the historically bad LA Rams.
Has a team ever opened the season with a shutout and then turned around and got shutout the next week? Because I think it might happen

Though like I said before if Gabbert makes some of those throws he made last night…those are picks by Carolina.

Benjamin will be a good test for the young secondary. Really wish Lynch was active, it's going to be tough to bring Cam down or slow him down with pressure. I do expect it to be more competitive than last years game vs the Steelers.

Trying not to get too optimistic considering what happened last year.
A main reason Gabbert was not sacked Monday: his average time from snap to release was just 2.03 seconds, second fastest of any Week 1 QB.
Joe Staley did not allow a QB pressure last night and earned the best grade of any left tackle in Week 1. #49ers

lol i didn't want to bring that chit in here. Honestly neither guy is the answer.
Best thing we can hope for is that Tank's conversion to OLB ends up being a great one and he's around for a while helping our pass rush and Hyde stays healthy and continues doing what he's doing. The trade would've been even better if Borland wasn't a bitch who retired early and if Lemonier actually did something.
At one point the trade netted us Tank, Lemonier, Borland, Hyde and Stevie Johnson. And nobody wants to recognize how bad this team was early last season and I'm not sure how much better Alex would've done and if he could've survived that season mentally. Best thing for Alex was getting traded. Which is why I think Kap not taking a paycut to go to Denver was a big mistake on his behalf.

Not sure if others will agree but there were a handful of PI's not called on us in this game. In the past those things have always been called against us but this game the flags stayed in the refs pockets (hopefully nfl refs don't hate us like in the past years). It was a good change to see but it really made our secondary look better than it is.

Yeah i was surprised we didn't get flagged for a few of those plays…playing at home certainly could've helped with that so it will be interesting to see how things are called on the road. I'm sure after what happened last week against Cam it wouldn't surprise me to see us get a couple of flags for roughing which normally wouldn't be called..that is if we can get to him.

True he needs to work on that. At least he isn't taking unnecessary sacks because of it. I also see us getting more flags on the road, I hope they stay disciplined.

I only saw 1 play where I thought dang that was pass interference on us and then it wasn't, but I don't think there was anything too egregious that went uncalled. Hopefully we can maintain that level of discipline on the penalty front going forward.
I watched Bowman mic'd up and he and Staley at the end are talking about how they were hyped last year and got too big headed then we all know the rest of the story. Glad the vets and the coaches won't let that happen this year, if we lose it won't be because we think we're too good.
