Did the same. Had AMD at 54 and NVDA in the 200s pre split last spring (2020) and got bored with them too quickly.

So, does anyone have any tips on taking profits?
I have a handful of stocks that are at 40% gain and was wondering if I should trim or let them ride? (Looking at you TSLA, MSFT, GOOGL, COST, etc)

40%?

Just keep it.

Never make an investment decision for a non-investment reason. (ie, rebalancing your portfolio, taxes, or selling just because something is a winner)

sell if something obvious has changed about the stock or the space of the market it's in.
Spoiler alert; you die at the end.

If there's a stock I think is peaking and I am not that interested in the company, I might put a portion of it on a Sell Stop Limit. I'm doing that with an energy ETF and other energy stocks. If you think it's peaked, by all means sell if you think there's a better opportunity.

If it's NVDA, AMD, MSFT, ETHE, GBTC. I let them ride. I'm holding and buying dips.

I got a Roth rollover incoming. Not sure what I'm gonna buy. Probably split between TSLA, MSFT, AMD. And keep some back for any dips.

Don't sell the big household names like MSFT, NVDA, TSLA, GBTC etc

But if its a less "poweful" company and you're up double to triple digit percentages consider taking 10-25% off the table to lock in profits

I still occassional trip the large cap stocks when my profits reach 50-100% but I'm only taking small fractions like the example mentioned above and normally they correct shortly after so I buy back in
