does it matter that there is no real string buzz and that the neck still has discernable bowing? there didn't seem to be any point in my turning where there was significant resistance, it was actually easier to turn than I thought it would be

If you press at the 1st and 17th frets and the strings are dimed against the frets, then there is no neck bowing, so what method are you using to determine the bow?

Also, it's good that the truss moves easily.
Deepfat: "I guarantee I beat you by at least 6 strokes. Afterwards, I'll slide my thick conservative cawk in your old lady just to finish the job."

z4: "So when are you available in September to play?"

Deep: "On second thought, I don't play golf with broads. You're such a scumbag that I'd be much more inclined to just slap the chit out of you."

z4: "MMA match works, too. So when are you available this month?

Deep: "I won't subject myself to being in the presence of a scumbag."

oh just visually it doesn't look straight and has bowing, I just don't have the experience to understand what is acceptable bowing and what is not. I do understand that guitar necks are never supposed to completely straight but previous to my adjusting my truss rod my Suhr's playability and string height had noticeably changed over the past month or two.
I attributed this change to climate differences affecting the wood.

the tightening I did seemed to have improve the playability and lowered the string action back to where I remembered it more or less.
I'm kinda annoyed at my buddy who advised me to adjust the truss rod myself, his directions were much less specific and nuanced.

It should kind of look bowed from a visual. Adjust the neck to the proper relief for the radius of the neck, and then take up the rest with a bridge/action adjustment to the 22nd fret. IIRC, Suhr has all their factory adjustment measurements listed on their website (or maybe it's the Suhr forum).

As for your friend, he had your best interests at heart and thought he was doling out accurate advice, so just take him out for a beer and then punch him in the arm hard af.

Nothing wrong with adjusting the truss. As long as you're using the correct sized tool and not making big adjustments or trying to force it when it's maxed out you won't do any damage. Stick to a quarter turn. Check it. Rinse repeat.

Playing style will ultimately determine what's right for the string tension. Holdsworth liked his necks flat with no relief but he wasn't strumming chords and he had a soft touch with very light strings. That's not going to cut it channeling SRV on heavy cables really digging in and banging on the strings.

Honestly I realize that I want some kind of impossible setting where I want to be able to use effortless legato with the lightest touch and super wide, effortless vibrato and yet be able to whack the strings as hard as possible - just an unrealistic dynamic range.

If forced to choose I think I'd choose the Holdsworthian flat neck over the SRVish tendonitis inducing feel.

In this video former prodigy exposes Paul Giblert as a hack and a charlatan!

Who knew that all this time Giblert wasn't actually cleanly cross picking but just muting the sound with finger muting technique.

It's got surprisingly good tone with a long battery life.
I've checked out the Roland Micro Cube, and the Vox Mini, but I really like the form factor of the Fly.

If you don't mind plugging in to a wall socket the Yamaha THR series is also worth looking into.

How do I play so fluid like this, his chops are so righteous man

No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

learn a bunch of michael schenker chops maybe with a dash of eric johnson descending pentatonic 5s and a splash of zakk wylde alternating pentatonic 2-per-strings and a generous helping of the def leopard mind-set

Cuz I feel anyone who's a legit guitar player wouldn't mind there being a sticky for guitar in this otherwise cesspool of a forum

Ibanez goes headless.

Interesting development because you'd expect them to milk this new design and add some Strandberg and Kiesel artists to the roster.

Edit: and…

The only headless guitar I really want is an original Steinberger from the 80s. I was reading about those guitars and they really seemed ahead of their time.

So what the fukk is going on here with his legato and the ease of execution where his pull-offs look so minimal and effortless - is it that he has X-men powers in his hands? Super strength in his fingers?
What do y'all think his string gauge and action is?
When I try to do legato that sounds as articulate as this I have to exert some serious finger muscle and my hands tire out quickly - I can't be all "effortless" or the sound is so weak and pathetic as to be worthless. I use .10s on my Suhr with what I consider to be medium action.
