I know these feels. Herniated a disc in my back last monday, couldn't walk till wednesday, had every symptom of sciatica... thought my tour was over.... had to take my first week of serious summer training completely off... felt fkn horrible.
Now I'm back and fukkin smashing the weights harder than ever before.

The human body is fragile, being a little floppy vag and avoiding strengthening your body will do you no good.
You should be able to lift heavy things off the ground, it doesn't get any more primal than that. If you cannot lift a fuking weight off the floor without fuking your chit up then your chit is fuked, you will need to unfuk your chit instead of just completely avoiding it.
Edit: To give you some perspective, oly lifters are vigorously ripping weights of the floor, cleaning/front squatting it up and throwing it over their heads. They do this day in, day out. Miscers are whining about just picking up a weight off the floor.

For what it is worth, I got one bad injury from deadlifting. It was during one of the toughest weeks of my life at that point. Life turned upside down on me. I tried 315 and strained my spine and it hurt for about a week.
I'm saying this because I believe it was my state that led to my trip to snap city. I was distressed, not eating right, and tried to do what I normally do.
I truly believe that deadlifts are a wonderful exercise and the most practical for every day life. But there is no place for ego and what you can deadlift is somewhat dependent on the day it is. If you're on fire, you can probably do a little more. If you're sad and weak, go light. Be honest with yourself and your capacity. I'd you do that, you can be like the 78 year old grandma that is deadlifting her heart out.
Again, be honest with yourself about what you can do. Then, inch upwards and lay a brick.

You have my sympathy. Back injuries are truly terrible. If you go to the docs be warned with a lower back injury they will want to stick a finger up your ass, this is to test the muscle, apparently if your anus grips their finger it's good, if it's slack it's bad. I can't remember the reason the doc said. Best thing you can do right now, is take some painkillers {ibuprofen is best}, and try to relax. {that could be difficult} because tension will just make you feel worse.,try and get into a comfy position in bed. In the morning get up and reassess it.
I have strained my upper and lower back at different times and actually the time I strained my upper back was much more painful. I could not even clear my throat without terrible stabbing pains and it restraining itself . Took ages to go as well.
Iam not a fan of deadlifts, even with proper form , and it's one of those exercises that aren't essential in bodybuilding. I am of the opinion these days ,that why take risks when you don't need to. You can build an amazing back without them using various rowing movements, pull downs and pullups.

Just take some time off and let it get better naturally. If it doesn't get better naturally, see a doc
When it starts feeling better, stretch and then try the lift again with baby weight and see how it feels. If you're aggrivating the injury again stop and give it some more time
Eventually you will be able to resume. Getting back into the lift at the correct point will promote the muscle repairing itself correctly
Or you could just quit doing everything, let the muscle heal in a fuked up way and never exercise it, then complain about a bad back for the next 90 yrs
Your call
