The world is more complicated and we have a MUCH higher standard of living now compared to 50 years ago. Standard of living requires more income.

it's not necessary, but it is the norm. many four year college degree jobs can be learned with a high school education and six months of on the job training. it's disgusting.

Basically, "education inflation" on a massive scale. Possibly well-intentioned gov't programs to provide subsidized student loans etc. served only to feed a huge new crop of sheep into the educational complex, in the process saddling them with massive debt in return for "education" of questionable usefulness.

1- politicians realized it was a good way to saddle people with debt so they would be easier to control

2- politicians realized it was an easy way to indoctrinate people for four formative years of their lives, thus making them life long democrat voters.

If the really were interested in getting people actual jobs they would be calling for free trade schools. Not everyone is going to be an engineer or doctor, thats just a fact of life. have you ever heard one of these free college politicians call for that? hell no.

Free trade with poor countries --> Outsourcing --> Lack of quality jobs --> an oversupply of workers --> ability for employers to demand the labour force equivalent of Chads (henceforth LF Chads).

During the oil boom here in Canada a lot of jobs paying 6 figures didn't even require a HS diploma. Everyone was a LF Chad. Granted you had to work in -40 weather with lots of OT but it did provide opportunity at least.

Education is an easy filter to sort through a large stack or resumes and if the state+people are going to foot the bill for an education then why not ask anyways? It would be far more efficient to train people for jobs that aren't particularly technical/require specialized knowledge. Employers should perhaps pay a small payroll tax scaling with relevant education to keep them honest in their employment demands and to stop the race to the bottom of unnecessary education inflation.

there's three problems here:

1. Colleges. They keep raising tuition because they are growing more administrators than teachers. Instead of focusing on their "core" (which is teaching undergrad), they are out there hiring more admin, doing research or non-academic activities (sports). Dont get me wrong, research is very important but why should the tuition for undergrad students go up? If the University wants more research, they need to go out there and find more grant money. Sports is another issue; tuition goes up so the schools can buy better equipment and facilities. Student athletes are free labor; they work their butts off and win/lose games but at the end, the university (and NCAA) is making money. none of it goes back to the students.

2. Student Loans. Banks and the govt back these students with loans. as tuition prices go up, so do the loan amounts. neither one of them look at the quality of the education of the student. they have no incentive to qualitize the loans based on possible return on investments of the students since students cannot back out of these loans. student loans are exempt from bankruptcy

3. Students. They are naive and want that education but dont have the common sense to understand that a useless degree from a prestigious school is still a useless degree. instead of being practical, they want to go to the best university they can get into. they spend 5 years flip flopping majors and fail to realize that unless they gain some usefull skills or connections, they will graduate and not be marketable

This is an emotive topic, because everybody who's gone to college is defensive over their decision due to debt and time wasted, and everybody who hasn't gone to college stays extremely insecure about their choice no matter how old they get (they'll refer to their earnings to distract you from their insecurity, but make no mistake, they'll always fear that they haven't reached their intelligence-potential). This leads to non-sense discussions as each side tries to sooth themselves while arguing against the other.

People must go to college now because of division of labour, technological advancements - even bottom rung call centre jobs can be highly specialised now, and most importantly, because there simply aren't enough jobs for people who leave school. Even having a degree, PhD, and experience does not give you any sort of job security nowadays.

Because the way university/college has been marketed people go who there think its the end all be all to get job but in reality you will still be umemployed with a useless degree in makeup which won't give you the necessary experience to secure a job.

This too. Women now occupying a majority of spots in many programs, even some of this historically male dominated (e.g. medicine). And ultimately - for the most part, if these women want to be happy in life, they seek to marry a "higher tier" male and then drop out of the workforce taking with them those skills and what could have been provided to the society who helped subsidize their education. Of course at this level the dating pool is limited - a lot of top tier men are wise to the game and either refuse to marry in the first place or just string them along as side pieces.

It's a business like anything else, and it's overtaken many young people as the only way to get ahead. Like school they are not teaching what it really takes to get ahead.

Networking and faking much more than you actually know but making people believe it.

Here is a useful graph for this topic. In 1940, around 5% had a bachelor's degree. Today, it's around 25-30%.

You don't go to college to make money. You go to college so you don't have to break your body doing a trade or lose your mind doing depressing work.

The economy was by far the best it's ever been and there wasn't so much technology which means far more manual labor type jobs available.
