8% of all adults had a college degree in 1960, and 1 in 20 (5%) had a college degree in 1940.

Today, the number is around 30-35% (and growing).

Why is college so mandatory today when compared to yesterday?

In those days, you could buy a car, own a home, and start a family on a high-school diploma alone. Today, you need 4 years of college, 4-6 months of internships, 2-3 years of entry-level work, and 10-15 years of paying back student loans before you can begin.

Yeah and they didn't even need all that stuff to get girls. Now it's a prerequisite along with height, hairline, neck size, shoulder to waist ratio, and verbal dom behavior. Unbelievable. Our parents had life on easy mode.

Step 1: Don't go to college

Step 2: Be good at IT

Step 3: Get certifications from Cisco, Microsoft and a CISSP for tryhards

Step 4: Make more then 90% of college graduates with minimal time investment and no student loan debt. Also goat hours and playing online poker 50% of the day.

You can learn/get licensed in a lot of chit that doesn't require a college degree, and still be making as much as an average college grad. IT and real estate are just a couple

Manufacturing shipped overseas. Manual labor jobs to immigrants. Rising technical needs in the workforce. Many employers toss resumes in the trash (virtually, usually using automated programs to scrub them) if there is no mention of a degree. People just need to adjust. If you need it spelled out for you, it's because we have outsourced many manufacturing jobs overseas which previously comprised the backbone of our economy. Combined with technological advancements, we've shifted to a knowledge based and a service based economy (plus tradies LOL).

For the most part, you either have a degree and partake in the knowledge part of the economy (STEM, business, etc) or you don't and partake in the service part (retail, restaurant, customer service, etc).

there are TONS of high-skilled technical jobs. in IT, Engineering, medical, etc. Thats what the world needs right now. We are advancing our tech globally, one of the best ways to be apart of that is educating yourself in the roots of that tech (math, science etc).

The problem with universities is they allow people to spend 4 years getting a degree in a language they already speak and charging just as much as someone studying machine learning and AI.

Then the people who made that poor choice, which was facilitated by the university, expect to magically get jobs left and right.

We need to treat colleges the way they should be treated; as a place to expand your understanding of the world. NOT as a job fair. This way when someone says they're majoring in English they won't have an unfounded expectation of high demand for their skills - which is only true for people pursuing what the world needs to expand its technological capabilities.

Not necessary for certain fields. Making $60k in IT without a 4 year degree and no student debt. I just couldn't handle being in huge debt without promise of a job/career after finishing.

Currently work for a lab testing water, air, soil, oil. No college degree. Im also typing this from my hotel in Switzerland.

Also, guaranteed loans means colleges are hustling like crazy to get people enrolled. They essentially have an endless pool of guaranteed money. Look at the tuition rate increases between then and now to get an idea

For the cost vs. how much you get back for 90% of majors. It isn't worth it for a lot of people.

I see a lot more people with 2 year degrees be a lot farther ahead of the people with 4 year degrees until they are in their 30s-40s
