I already have a diamond passed down to me by family and I'm gonna be looking at getting it in a new setting. Hoping to keep that around $500. And even that feels like a lot to spend srs

I would have been worried about this, but because of the shape of the ring she doesn't need a wedding band and neither of us paid hardly anything for the wedding itself. Also, that money for the ring works out to something like 1/25 of my annual salary so not even slightly perturbed.

It's best to take your girl ring shopping together or at least ring looking. It's gives you an idea of what she likes and what she expects and how much you'll need to save up. It also gives you an idea of whether you really want to commit to her or not. if she is asking for a ring that is beyond your means (assuming she knows how much you make) and is unwilling to compromise, then it's probably not a good idea to proceed with wedding plans.
