Been there quite a lot and have thought about these things for a while
It is like most other expensive cities where it is just plain difficult to survive due to the extreme cost of living. If you don't have a high paying job there you are going to have a bad time unless you have low expectations for housing and safety and such. People struggle a lot but the allure of the city is hard to escape so they choose to just suffer there rather than leave anywhere else and have to deal with that massive lack of stimulation. Public housing for poor people is literally blocks away from the wealthiest areas which breeds these types of weird interactions lol. It's pretty much expected to be stressed out 24/7 if you are a self sustaining adult. Prices where I'm at aren't exactly low either but at least life is a little slower paced and leaves room for others. Something like a quarter of the NYC's population is on some sort of welfare, just think about that, it's not as simple as "m'capitalism learn new skills in this free market you lazy bums".
One thing is for sure though, the city literally has everything. Beaches, snow, a river, suburban areas, urban areas, music nonstop, nonstop entertainment, fun dating if you're around 6.5-7/10 (chads and HBB's just plow each other and lose their souls). There is just an unlimited amount of chit to spend money on and very little money to spend for most of the population but that's life son.

Been there twice and wasn't impressed. Some cool things to see, but way to crowded and busy for my liking. Living in a much smaller city now, I prefer the subs or even just outside the subs where you can get acres upon acres of land. Still close to the "city", but also very quiet and peaceful.
No matter what city you go to, East, Midwest or West, you're going to run into the same issues as in the OP (Homeless people, higher crime, congestion, etc).

Grew up in the Bay Area, lived in SF for many years and now living in Brooklyn. SF tenderloin homeless people are on crack (if you ever lived in SF, there are different types of homeless), and NYC homeless people are on heroin. In SF you'll you get chased down for ignoring some homeless, whereas NYC homeless just sit there.
In any case, you just sound like a pussy. Always make eye contact with homeless people.

Also, there are tons of places in the subs to go shopping. They are typically spread further apart, BUT there is less traffic to get to those places and usually you can get place-to-place much faster. Takes me like 20 minutes to just get out of my neighborhood onto a freeway.
My Grandpa has a hobby farm and I've basically grew up going into the "country" and that's probably where it comes from.

The Food: as if you idiots can afford to eat every night, and lets say the food is as good as you say it is, which it isn't, anyone can spend 1 week learning to cook and it would taste just the same. I just got back from 2 NYC trips because of interviews and ate at expensive and hole in the walls and they all tasted like food i found in Florida.
Things to do: Not a single person said what these "things to do" are thats so attractive to live in NYC. They just regurgitate "things to do".
Ignore the homeless: if you have to say this, your city is sht.

You guys that are having interactions with homeless people need to learn to ignore them. Just look at your phone and make no eye contact of any kind.
That aside NYC is pretty dirty though. Not just the homeless people but there is trash everywhere and so many people look filthy and stink.
I've been to Seoul, South Korea and it is a 1000 times better than New York. I got reverse culture shock when I returned at how fat, ugly, sweaty and smelly Americans are when I came back

There's a lot of negatives in the city, but you get used to them pretty quickly, and learn to ignore them.
The positives far out weigh the negatives imo. If you want to make a lot of money and pursue your career, there's nowhere better to be, the social life can't be touched either.

There is what 9 million people there in that relatively small patch of land? It's being taken over by transplants and foreigners with money. I had a family member who inherited an old storefront in Brooklyn, no one would even consider touching this area a decade ago. My great uncle would not believe what that place got bought for today.
