I dont see a bug out bag actually being useful. unless we get attacked by a military force and have to run? i dont really understand. in a natural disaster (hurricane) you have days lead time to pack chit and leave its not like saving 20 minutes throwing some protein bars in a wal mart bag will get you killed in that scenario. you cant run from an earth quake so BOB completely useless in that scenario as well. in a flood a bag will weigh you down and drown you..

maybe is a solar flare caused a massive EMP and reversed the earths magnetic field. but in that case we have other issues to worry about and again you would have time to grab some protein bars if you wanted to leave your house for some reason.

I used to have large and comprehensive bug out bags, now it's very small and compact with very few items.

I took up hiking a few years ago at the same time I became interested in survivalism, you don't need much to survive.

You definitely need some type of water supply, but food is overrated.

I've seen people pack 10,000+ calories in their 72 hour bag, it's nuts.

For water I just go the light option and keep a handful of Katadyn Micropur tablets.

A simple jar of peanut butter is one of the best things for emergency food since you can live off a jar for a good while.

It's sad I should have to explain this to plebs here with such minimal critical thinking skills or real life experience who can't figure this out:

To your points:

Not everyone lives within 10 minutes of their mommy. I was new to the area and knew no one

I didn't know if I would be out of the house for 3 minutes, 3 hours, or 3 days. So, figured I hunker in my SUV (which is damn comfortable) for a while and go to a hotel if it went passed my comfort zone where I was, but I got a text in the early am saying it was safe to return home. I was actually in the parking lot of a shopping mall and a 24/7 CVS there I could have gotten what I needed etc.

The experience clearly states I didn't need the BOB, but it did give me an appreciation for having it.

Had I just gone straight to a Hotel, having no idea how long I'd be there, I again, would have been happy I had the BOB as it contained several items I'd want to have with me due to the fact I had zero time to pack anything. Mine has a travel tooth brush and such.

I'm glad I don't have some dramatic story how the BOB saved my life etc, but simply my recent experience that showed me it's a good thing to have handy. The story is not why people should have a basic BOB, but why I was happy I had one. Reading comp skills of the misc. seem to have dropped to a 4th grade reading level these days.

This is not rocket science. Assume your mommy and friends will be able to take care of any emergency that may arise if you wish.

- 4 liters of water
- pack of condoms & tampons
- foldup shovel
- compact shortwave radio
- larger than usual pocket knife
- selection of those food pouch things the army uses. IUD, no, IED... whatever they're called. MRE's?
- change of clothes
- those heat blankets that fold up into a deck of cards size
- my cat and cat bed with assorted canned cat food and cat treats
- solar charger with adapters
- illegal taser. If law's gone who gonna arrest me?

Why have one? We're just one simple step away from disaster. one major power outage and the country will go to hell. It's already gone to hell with chaos and protestors that they can't control. Take out communications networks or power stations, and boom. You don't have have any rights anymore, and certainly none of the privileges.

An old HS buddy of mine is strong with the survival preparation. Every so often we go out bush.

I actually have a shelf in one of the spare bedrooms that has a lot of stuff I'd need for a "survival" situation. First aid kid, water purification, container for water, container to boil / cook in, knives, paracord, backpacking meals, fish hook / line, rain poncho, emergency shelter / blanket, compass, etc. Same room has firearms and ammunition, and a number of backpacks.

I already had a bunch of stuff because I'd camp a lot, so I just organized it in a place where I could easily find it on a moment's notice. I keep one pack loaded with essentials, and could add to that in a few minutes with a lot of the other stuff as necessary.

What most of the morons in this thread don't realize is that while it will likely never really be needed, it's a smart thing to have, relatively inexpensive, and there are any number of hurricane / flood / natural disaster / extended loss of power situations where it could come in handy. And besides, anyone who camps or is outdoors probably has all the stuff anyway. No reason not to have it organized.

Agreed on all, obviously. People should have a closet dedicated to that stuff, be it a "hurricane" closet, "earth quake" closet or "blizzard closet" and so forth relating to where you live and most likely major challenge you might face. Anyone who has a family and does not have such a thing, is a failure as protector of their family and will pay a heavy price due to living in denial that chit happens. To not have a basic BOB is failure to live in real T.

For that matter, I always have the top shelf it the pantry stocked with spare food. The food gets rotated, but that shelf always remains full. You never know when something might cause you to need to shelter in place for a little bit.

Back in 2003, we had a very large power outage here in the midwest / northeast that had some people's power off for a week or more. Our town was one of the new that had power and people were literally driving from 50-60 miles away just to get gas. The main street was packed and there was a line around the block to go though the McDonald's (and other restaurants) drive-thrus. And the grocery stores in the area were cleaned out within about 24-36 hours. I was loading up water containers and taking them to friends all over the place.

Sh!t can happen.
