Just LOL at people without a BOB

I don't think I have ever done a "just LOL" thread*, but I'm always astounded by how totally unprepared people are for even the most basic stuff life may throw at them, assuming it will never happen to them, and when it does, they are screwed.

Cliffs: Chit happens, basic BOB may save your a$$. Don't be a statistic.

A BOB = Bug Out Bag. It's a bag you put together with some basic stuff to survive should you have to leave your place with very little notice and be able to survive. There's all different types, but the best rule of thumb is enough stuff that you can survive 72 hours without any help. Why 72? Stats show that it you survive the first 72 hours of an event, your chances of survival go up sharply. Obviously longer is better, but one can only carry so much stuff.

This is not some Rambo prepper chit, it's basic common sense and stuff like water, shelter, meds you may need, basic first aid kit, flashlight, and so forth, put into a good quality back pack you can grab and go or "bug out" with. One can buy a pre made one, but like most things in life, better quality for less $ if you spend a little time doing it yourself. Obviously, one can get crazy with this stuff, but even the US and other governments recommend people have the basics (1) and there's no place on this planet you're safe from various natural or made made disasters that may require to go with minutes of notice.

If you don't think you could need to leave in a moments noticed, and or be forced to stay where you are for a few days due to any number of natural or man made disasters, you're a statistic in the making and delusional. If you make one due this post and it saves you, thank me later. If you're one of the few here who was smart enough to have a basic BOB, what do you have in it and have you ever needed it?

Sitting in my office I hear loud bang bang on the door. I open it and it's a cop to tells me there was a gas pipe breach a few blocks over due to mistake during construction and I had to evacuate now. Like right now. I opened the closet door, grabbed my BOB and was out. He said they'd alert people when it was safe. Would that hours, days, more? I had no idea. Alert me how? I had no idea.

I ended up spending the night in may SUV, and was very happy I had that BOB. Luckily, no massive explosion that took out my house. I didn't need much from it other than some water and an MRP I had in it, but it was nice to know had things been worse, I would likely be fine. Personally, unless forced to, no interest in shelters with all the others who made zero preparations for themselves and their family to survive even basic short term emergencies

* misc detectives will probably prove me wrong, but if I did, was a long time ago, so bite me.

Can confirm though, having one of these is a good idea. never thought I'd need one, until a few years ago when a bunch of fires that grew way too quick forced us to evacuate.

I could have sure, and would have if it lasted longer than the one night it did, but obviously I didn't know if it would last an hour or 5 days. I got a text in the early am it was fixed and we could return. I'd left without even shutting stuff off and such. Again, hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Anything else is just poor thinking.

Don't forget to get a "get-home-bag" in your vehicle. Especially for those who live in areas with more extreme weather.

If something happened I would go to family or friends' house. Worst case scenario, hotel room. I understand being prepared but honestly, unless you live in the middle of nowhere enough resources will be available.

That's fine. Just don't glom off others who are smarter than you are when it comes time to be that statistic. You'll be the first one on line at some shelter etc looking for the basic stuff. US government et al recommends people have that stuff per link above. Guess they too recommend people "play doomsday preppers" Derp.

Millions of people are wrong about that assumption every year. One has nothing to lose and everything to gain by having the basics in a BOB. Not sure why that's so hard to fathom for some, but generally clueless about how fast things can go to chit seems primary reason.

When SHTF, you're going to want to stay put OP not bug out into the unknown. Your house blowing up is the only logical reason I can think of that a BOB would be useful for you to split from your house, but then again.. you could have just hit a hotel or grabbed some Chipotle rather than eating your MRE.

Personal opinion aside, good info for people to be prepared for anything OP.

Hence why anyone serious about it has a means of self defense for those idiots who didn't prepare at all, but that's another topic and not PC to discuss, so we will stick to the basics of what one may need for a few days before help arrives.

I thought I was weird for making one at first - I made one when the whole ebola thing was flaring up. We pay thousands per year for auto/home/health insurance but then neglect survival insurance in case **** really goes down. It's a lot cheaper than other insurance too - I put together a pretty robust bag for around 300 bucks.

Whether you stay put or leave, a BOB is good to have as simply a single location essential stuff exists. There's MANY reasons one may need to leave with little notice if you think about it a tad more perhaps. I'd much rather "bug in" than out given the choice. Floods, house not safe due to structural issues of earth quake, train carrying chems jumps the track, etc, etc.

Not exactly no, but I'm sure some use the term interchangeably, but a go bag is absolute essentials and usually smaller than a true 72 hour BOB.

Honestly the usefulness of a BOB pales in comparison to having cash on hand for the scenarios you listed while living in a first world country like the US. You could have a BOB in the US and when there's some catastrophic flood and all you have is a small amount of cash in your wallet + credit/debit cards and your BOB you're gonna be more fuked than you would be without a BOB but with 1k in cash.

I can see the usefulness of a BOB in a remote area or 3rd world country but that's about it.
