No paid overtime. Sometimes I've worked 4 hours a day for a week. Sometimes a few months of 7 day work weeks, 10-18 hours of work each day, interrupted sleep, little contact with the outside world.
Just general BS that you deal with on a daily basis.
Lots of backstabbing and brown nosing going on.

That's just my perspective, from being on a submarine, for a few years. Not getting shot at, not stationed overseas. But if I had to do it all over again, I can honestly say I wouldn't.
What is so bad about living on base?

If you're stationed somewhere like Fayetteville NC, then yeah, women are looking to board the military dink in hopes of getting out of there.

I absolutely hate that uninformed people make the immediate connection between "Military" and "Combat". Aside from the fact that even combat death is low, the military is multifaceted and hasplentyof non-combative roles.

It's equally annoying that when I tell people I was in the Air Force, they immediately ask "Oh, you were a pilot?"

you are used to promote the glory of war against an enemy youre told to hate, created by the same people who are sending you into battle which in turn makes them money, and leaves you with potential stress disorders and the inability to rejoin usual life one your term is over.

Came in at 18. Been retired one year now.

Pros:
Collecting pension
Free education. I finished my doctorate last year because it was free.
Starting second pension in my 30s as federal employee

Cons:
Lived in some less than ideal places
Skills did not exactly transfer to outside

When getting ready to retire, you are making decent $. I worked up from enlisted to officer, and got flight pay as well. Had to make decent $ on the outside to pair with my pension to keep up standard of living. Glad I'm out now and leave work around 4 every day. People who do not utilize their educational benefits while in generally are not set up well for transitioning out of the military.
