What's the disadvantage of going into the military?

Okay so you get a 2-5k/mo pension after 20 years
You get to travel
You get job security
Etc


What's the downside???

The pay is not good for a long while.
No control over where you live
No control over really any aspect of your life
Living on base or in the chit town outside of it
Being away from your real friends and family
Having ******* bosses and mundane work but being unable to quit.



It's got plenty of downsides.

EDIT: ya you can die at any moment..but if you're in combat or near a combat zone I would think your chances are higher.

Didnt like 60k die in Detroit during the time that 6k died in 'war'

Also, your odds of dying in these conflict wars arent even that high.. Almost as many military personel died under Bill Clinton as under George W. Bush. Any time you take 2 million people, thousands will inevitably die regardless of circumstances.

I'm in the army and here is my input. Join it if you want to have a stepping stone or change you're career as they offer training, Certs, experience in some fields. If your trying to make it a career then you dun goofed because if your hardworking enough you can make more on the civilian side. I joined to serve my country is the biggest BS I heard from most people. And some people think were heroes and chit while some of us are the biggest POS ever.

Experience may vary. You can get sent to North Dakota for your entire enlistment, or Germany. You can get deployed to Afghanistan, or a TDY to Berlin for an air-show. It's all about where they need you and when. If you are going to join, join the Air Force. I can't really think of a single reason to join any other branch. I absolutely loved my time in... countless priceless experiences, as well as lifelong friendships. I'd do things a bit differently if I could do it all over but I'd still pick the Air Force. I visited 19 countries before my 22nd birthday. But like I said... for every guy who gets stationed in Europe, there's probably two getting sent to Montana or Wyoming.

Worst is no paid overtime which is illegal most places.

So you go on 'training deployments' all the time for a week straight, or the first sergeants wife isn't giving up the booty so he keeps the whole company on duty til midnight.

Either situation you get no extra pay and don't get to go home.

Or an actual war breaks out. Sure then they give you a little extra money but nothing like time and a half over 8 or double time over 12.

Almost everything is a good or bad, depending on perspective....

- Guaranteed job for 4-year enlistment contract, but also means you're required to stay for that period.
- Opportunity for travel, but you'll have minimal or no choice in the destination
- Lower pay, but relatively impressive benefits
- Tremendous opportunities for training & experience, but lots of rules & regulations

The only thing that really makes or breaks an enlistment is your job. Pick something worth your time and you know you'll enjoy doing.
Admin, anything logistics related, utilities, and you fukin goofed hard. Only speaking from a marine corps standpoint though but those mos's
seem to be the most worthless when you get out.

This, there are a lot. If you end up at a shytty or demanding command as well...pepper your angus. I dont regret the experience now (I only did 4 years), but there are plenty of downsides, especially if you end up at one of those shytty commands or billets like I mentioned. The amount of shyttiness you experience at one of those makes it all very clear- You are government property and they can completely shyt all over and exploit you and you have to just suck it up until your contract is over and gtfo.

The military does take care of you to some extent (gives you the essentials), and I sometimes compare it to be kind of like living with your parents. There are certain things they fulfill in that regard and its easy to get into a comfort zone with it. I understand why people end up staying in, I had quite a bit of anxiety about getting out despite how eager I was to get away from all the BS.
