In the US, where these issues of poverty are not nearly as prevalent, other sports are far more popular. If we elect some commie Bernie Sanders type and become a socialist ****hole like South America, then yes, I could see a simple activity like soccer becoming more popular.
this miscers speaks the truth
south america/southern europe are poor/poverty and having simply a ball made it accessible to a LOT of people. So if that was pretty much the only thing they played it is obvious why things have turned out the way it has.
USA, where the average purchasing power is much higher, developed sports that feature more complex assets. brb special fields, gear, stadiums etc

Soccer is probably the GOAT sport.

I don't play soccer/dont really know how but I wish I learnt and played more during my childhood.

The thing about soccer is manlets and lanklets can play. It's not like other sports where your body type is just straight up advantageous
It's fairly cheap sport, in that all you really need is a ball, everything else is optional.
Can be played almost anywhere.
It's popular enough that, its easy to get a game together.

Right, as opposed to all the excitement the commercials provide

With proper coaching I think the USA unfortunately could be a great team due your country being extremely intimidating to the opposition. Look at me for example: I was aiming for professional and developed severe psychiatric illness, obviously the work of the Illuminati to stop me achieving world class status (true story, brah's)

This. It's the helicopter parents pushing their special snowflake kids into soccer instead of NFL or other contact sports that is causing this.

I'd personally rather watch 11 minutes of NFL with its 1 minute of real action per game then a bunch of ***s kicking the ball back and forth for a 0-0 score.

Football is easily the most popular and richest sport in the world by far! It requires the most amount of talent to win world titles due to the massive amount of competition. Unlike American sports which have about 3 countries that play them and yet the winners have the audacity to call themselves "world champions". LMAO!

Soccer is a great game and very intense. There's no commercial breaks and the rules are simple. You do need some patience because the game is 90 actual minutes, not 10 seconds bursts with 2 minutes of commercials and 30 more seconds of refs reviewing the play on the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Tablets prvided by Microsoft. Get your Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Tablet at any electronic retailer near you. *Explosion graphics.... dancing robot*

MLS is growing at crazy rate.

It will never touch NFL in America.

But baseball/nba/nhl will be beat easily in under 10 years.

MLS is adding teams every year their goal is 32 teams.

22 teams currently.

24 next year.

Plus 12 bids for expansion submitted.

Warms my heart that soccer haters are a dying breed.

I grew up loving all the major sports so it's no ill will. But the commercials in NFL games are absolute AIDS.....Warmup > Commercial > Kickoff > Commercial > Timeout > Commercial > Play Review > Commercial.

One of my friends is an NFLcel and tries to tell me soccer is boring. Meanwhile we've seen the same Corona commercial 4 times within 20 minutes of an NFL game in between 1 yard gains. lmao

Also they want to waste money doing a stadium tour. Atlanda, Chicago, New York, Houston, etc. LMAO no thx jeff I'll take Barcelona, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam and Munich instead.

lol at people complaining about commercials. American sports have commercials and waiting periods because we treat it like an event that all can get by, even people who don't like or regularly watch sports.

Americans like contact. No one wants to sit there and watch 90 minutes of guys running around and doing nothing but kick a ball. We like to see drama, we like to see pain. We live for the moments where we can yell at the screen because something foul, amazing, or unbelievable happens. And having commercials and marketing value just adds more to the specialty of the event that's to be enjoyed.

Just lol @ everyone saying nobody cares about american rules football outside of the US. There are 37 semi pro football leagues in Europe, 18 in Asia, 13 between Central and South America and 12 between Australia and New Zealand. And that's leagues, not teams.

lol @ people who think its a no contact sports. its a very aggressive game when youre on the pitch, provided youre playing against players that know what theyre doing. there are shoulder to shoulder tackles, you can create space for yourself and push people off with your hands. slide tackles/etc. the real skill is that you have to disposes the person without fouling them (pushing from behind, spears, headbutts, wrestling them to the ground) but if you think theres no contact. walk into any college team and you'll be on your ass most of the game.

Anyone saying NBA>Soccer has to have mental issues. NBA, the way its played today is absolute garbage. 20-25 years ago was goat for NBA with actual rivalries and strategy. Now every player is friends with every other player, dunks, threes, fouls.... Thats it. Its too boring.

I've been watching way more soccer lately (mainly EPL) and its way more entertaining than anything the NBA offer.

MLS has the potential to maybe overtake NHL and MLB but I don't see it ever getting as popular as NBA or NFL. Sadly NHL just never takes off although I find it to be the most entertaining sport to watch and people just don't play baseball anymore in general. When I was a kid there were 8-10 teams in ever division of Little League. Now, the same Little League has 3 teams max and they play other leagues that are in the same situation. Soon it'll just die off as kids who never played won't give a chit for professional teams.
hard to hate on a fellow wings fan but....

i need to cut... badly.

lol come on breh, dont do mental gymnastics. People complain about low soccer scores, the same people barely even cheer a touchdown let alone a 2 pointer in the NBA.

Soccer by stereotype is the most dramatic sport in the world. Even american sports fans know how much fans lose their chit in South America or Europe.

Just get into it. Most people get into it by watching the major matches (Barca vs. Real, Man U vs Liverpool). I don't advise trying to get into it during world cup. World cup matches are usually tense, low scoring, and even low quality. The doors that being a soccer fan opens is actually crazy. Most places in the world that you'll visit are soccer crazy.

I've been a Redbull season ticket holder for a few years now and I can confirm every year the stadium is more and more packed. MLS is gaining ground big time. It's been wonderful.
