Depends on your family status.

I'm in my 3rd year of accounting and am grossing about 62k before taxes.

Being single, I am banking $1,200/mo in disposable income after mortgage/taxes/car/utilities/ect. If I had a wife and kids, we'd barely be getting by.

If you'reSINGLEand cant live a freaking amazing life making 45k/year pre tax, just lay down and rot boyo. Its when you get married and have kids when you really start feeling the pressure and financial stress.

How do you figure that a wife and kiddo would tear through that $1200 so badly?

I did. I joined the ANG right after high school and the full time people on base get paid by the government scale. I was a WG-10 which in my state paid $22 an hour, but there was a locality step increase which bumped it to $28 starting. Went up to $30 an hour, but I worked nights which there is a compensation for that which is another $2 an hour. That's $61,440 a year. I went on trips too so active duty pay and the per diem as well as deployments and drill weekends averaged it out to 70k a year.

And this is public knowledge as well if you don't believe me. All working grade salaries are public knowledge. Adding on, I was 19 when this happened.
I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time; never. These allegations are false. And I need to go back to work for the American people. Thank you.

I make 56k first job out of college. It’s fine for a single guy but really made me realize how others must struggle, especially those with kids.

That said I’ll probably take a cut into the 40s to get into my field. Right now I get an extra $1 shift differential pay so I’m at like 58k for the year.

Net about $3270 per month.

I think he might overestimate the numbers a bit, like a doctor thinks everyone is sick and cops think everyone is a crim, who does a financial advice guy hear from, people in trouble. Still, he has a point: a certain fraction are hopeless and will always be broke however much money and advice you give them.

I know a guy who got $300 a week and was always broke. Fair enough, it's not much. But later he got $1,800 a week cash in hand and wasstillalways broke. One time, "I lost $1,000 this week. It's probably somewhere in my room, I'll find it later, and if I don't no worries I'll just make more money next week." Who loses $1,000 in cash? And he always has a scheme to make even more money, but with much less work on his part. I think this is one of those guys, that 20% (or less, I hope).

The flipside to that is, a certain fraction are good and will never be broke, or not for long, however much bad sht happens to them. Bell curve, I guess. And then there's the rest of us, at least 2/3 the population, for whom some help will make a difference.

Probably the same applies to the fitness world, people's love lives, and so on.

In my case, I think it helped that I grew up relatively poor - for Australia, anyway. So I've got perspective that my family's doing well now. I think a lot of the Misc is lower middle class and up, so they've been well taken care of by their parents. Lots of them are without a job (posting from IPs in residential areas during business hours) and living at home with their parents at 25, still being taken care. So they've never had to budget, mum and dad always bail them out and take care of them. It's good to have a family who takes care of you, but certain skills aren't learned, and it gives them too much time to just bullsht online and make sht up. Which is fun and all, but is misleading for the guys just starting out who don't know any better. And for the Misc, this applies to fitness stuff as well as money.

Ambitious but realistic is the way to go, I think. Money is like what someone said of fitness: most people overestimate what they can achieve in the short term, but underestimate what they could achieve in the long term.

You can make big money but you have to pay your dues. I've had jobs in my early-mid 20s making 30k - 45k.

I was making 45k at 27. Then promoted got up to 55K. I think around 29 or so I was at 60k. I got six figures at around 31/32 or so?

2016 my W-2 was at $110,000. This year with bonuses and stocks included I should make 125k. Took me about ten years to get where I'm at though.

Easy boyo.

Add in her 400/mo car payment, her food, your kids' food, kids' clothes, dumb female spending, her student loans, her CC debt, increased utilities, the cost of having to put spouse and dependents on your healthcare plan... easily over 1,200.

My future wife better work. The cost of living is too high to keep the man only having income lifestyle.

A $400 car payment is pretty standard. And even if she doesn't have a car payment, you still have to pay insurance on whatever the hell she's driving.

Also, that's still not even the worst of it. Just adding a wife and a kid to a health insurance plan will easily be 600-1,000 deducted out of your paycheck. Compared to being free if it's just you.

Hmm. We drive older cars but we own them, which is a tradeoff I will always be fine with. I always forget how badly health insurance and benefits can chit on people since I work at a hospital and adding them was like... $90/month extra lol. Good points, need to realign my perspective.

I'll admit, I'm a financially conservative guy, but I do treat myself to more expensive cars since I can afford it. For those who buy used and go years without car payments, hats off to you - very smart.

The worst is for teachers. I worked with a former teacher who had 1,400 deducted from her paycheck for adding her entire family on there. As if teachers weren't already underpaid.

Morale of the story is people start families without being financially ready for it, because reality is, families are a heavy financial burden.

Seattle has had one of the fastest rises in house/rent prices in recent times.

Portland checking in also a silky cost of living here I made 43k last year and the wife made 38k and still feel broke just renting a two bedroom apartment about 15 mins outside of downtown.

I don't care how much or little you make, if you don't know how to spend it, you can go broke and be miserable fast. Retards on the Misc talking about how 100K "ain't chit", but they are basically saying they have wine taste and beer budgets. Guy on here showing a breakdown of how $200K can barely make it by.... then post where someone is living a rather lavish lifestyle, but still managing to have money left over.

The key is having little debt.

My outgoings bar mortgage and bills is around £50 a month.

No car finance no expensive phone etc. I own everything. When I get paid I pay X for the bills and mortgage. Rest is mine. Saving/investing buy something outright in a year.

**** the banks.

Like the intent of the thread. But I can tell you that without even looking at the replies, by this point in the thread it has already derailed into the exact arguments that you wished to clear up OP

did not read but promise half the thread is:

60K is poverty
LOL if you live in Cali/NYC
I Pull in 250k a year selling cars
etc etc

Best not to compare to people, specifically people on the MISC when it comes down to money.
Whenever someone asks me, I usually just write it off as "Enough to get by" or "Im not gonna starve any time soon" etc.

This. my mind is blown that people can't fukken live on $1000 a week and are still broke. Stop buying $5k tv-s and 40k cars that nobody cares about. $1200 a month on rent+bills, $100 a week max on food and $500 for fuel, phone and other expenses. Congrats, you now have $1900 left over per month.

instead of a 5k tv buy a $400 tv that is a couple of years old as used
instead of 40k car buy a $5k bulletproof car that needs no repairs(japanese)
instead of a 2k gaming laptop buy a $500 used laptop that has a generation older cpu but still a dedicated gfx card

etc

If you are clearing 1000 per week, you dont have to live like a peasant, either. Who the fukc buys old used TVs or 5k tin can cars making good money?

If you can be happy with that, all the more power to you. But IMO theres a good balance between living totally above or totally below your means. What is the point of working hard for good $$$ if you never spend it on anything and get no enjoyment out of having it? So you can save it all up and buy a decent car when you are 50, instead of now?

I personally dont get that either. With proper budgeting, being frugal, and realistically spending within your means.. you can have nice things like cars, electronics, toys, hobbies, etc, and also not be a broke paycheck to paycheck slave

If your banking 50k a year (single) then you can live an awesome life.
Not in Canada. Altho we have fake dollars.

Vancouver 100k a year is an alright income... I make far less.

If you're single and making 60K in a reasonably affordable city then you should have a very good life. if not, then you're truly a moron or don't know the VALUE of money.

Yes. So many ungrateful chits out there.

However, you should always strive for progression in everything in life. Including job, health, etc.
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.
