Spoke at a round table/panel thing at a conference, the CEO liked me, we had dinner to talk about the product and his vision, and he offered me a job.

I actually spent about 10 minutes trying to convince him that I was a terrible fit, lol. Was the 6th employee hired, we've now scaled to about 260. Most of the folks we hired in the earliest days were presenting at conferences.

I work as data scientist and I've just switched jobs. Took me 2 weeks to find new one. I got masters in computer science btw.

I did business with my current company at my old company. I needed a change of scenery and was looking to relocate to a new city. I put my resume public on linkedin for recruiters and companies immediately started to contact me. Suprisingly had numerous interviews right off the bat. The company I wanted to work for eventually contacted me and I drove down to do a face to face "interview" with them. It was mostly just to see what I looked like and to see how I acted in person because they already knew me from our work relationships. They gave me a job and gave me a 3 month window to move. I literally sold and bought a house in 6 days on thanksgiving week and moved a month after it sold.

Well I'm a bit younger, so you'll probably find this less useful but:

I got my first internship from a friend, second one from a family member
I get freelance gigs by seeking them out on my own. I tutor and photo/video.
also got a part time gig just by applying

I just graduated and looking for more freelance or assistant/internship stuff in photo/video/media. i may have to ask family members again, but planning on applying to a bunch of stuff, cold emails for unpaid internships that could evolve, etc. luckily i have my parents to financially support me for a transitionary period.

Applied for an IT help desk style job at the college I wanted to attend after I got out of the army. Turns out the interviewer was retired army, I did well in the interview and had great references from my previous chain of command so I got hired. Worked night shift for 5 years while attending college.

Applied for job as a linux admin/systems programmer at the same college when I had 2 semesters of classes left, was able to get it as I had 5 years of experience working with people the interviewer knew which helped them verify I'm not a tool, and I was a decent programmer. Graduated from college while at this job, was promoted to sys admin/programmer 2 and transferred to a different team.

After 1.5 years as a sys admin 2, my previous team contacted me about an opening as a sys admin 3, so I 'interviewed' and accepted the job. I am actually leaving this job on the 17th of this month and moving to Colorado to take a position as a systems engineer, which I got by applying on their website and interviewing like any other random off the street as I don't know anyone who works there now.

So, through a combination of putting in my time doing **** jobs like graveyard IT help desk while attending college, a little luck with getting in the door with the ex military connection, and hard work for years to climb the ladder. Mostly I would attribute it to working and having goals though.

I want to hear stories how you got your job. Maybe it can give me a different idea to approach this

As detailed you can be would be great.

Things I’ve tried:
1. Asking friends for job recommendations where they work for positions I could do
2. Mass applying through job sites
3. Finding recruiters on LinkedIn and messaging
4. Connecting with people who have similar jobs I want on LinkedIn and asking to speak about their responsibilities and the company they work for etc
5. Applying in person to places I see posted online
6. Reaching out to recruiting agencies for help
7. Job fairs (don’t even bother)
8. Stretched my skills on resume variations to as many different fields as I could
I went through the same thing OP for 8 months.

Was working in IT, laid off, couldnt find anything or get a response.

I was so desperate for work that i applied for warehouse work and the ones that did respond wouldnt hire me because they didnt think i would stay.

Started getting depressed and unemployment was running out.

Ended up going through Robert Half and landed a temp IT job at a hospital, ended up getting hired full time.

Went to a temp agency to sign up. As I was signing up, my current company called in for a temp. The agency asked me how close I was to them geographically and if I'd be willing to start the next day. Said yes.

Temped there for a month or two before they fully hired me. That was 5+ years ago. If I had come into the agency the next day, or even hours later than I did, I'd have been doing something else for the past 5 years. Funny to think about.

By not being totally worthless to my potential employer. Shtloads of people with degrees and no experience. Demonstrated success > potential success.

Also was handpicked on Linkedin due to being epic as fuk and smart about keeping my LI in top shape for that very reason.

An industry recruitment agent found me via LinkedIn (I like to think of it as being headhunted but really I just turned up in his search). I keep my profile up-to-date (it's basically my resume/CV) and I get quite a lot of enquiries through there, usually 2-3 per week.
