One of my good friends just bought a bunch of land in Merida and wants me to go there in the future. It's one of the few decent sized cities I haven't been to yet but I've been reading up on it and it seems great

Mexico is highly unstable with regards to government/security. Sure... from a day-to-day perspective... food/lodging/transportation... no real issue. But, you basically have martial law throughout the country. Even when cartel stuff picked up recently in the tourist areas... they had to send the military in. So if something happens to you, might happen to you, or gets sketchy ... what is your recourse? The police won't help you, so then what? The US government wants nothing to do with it ... so you're screwed in that angle. Your only option is to boat out or fly out.

Lets not forget that there is migrant crisis going on right now. People are fleeing the expanding violence in central america up through Mexico to get to the USA. While at the same time there have been over 100 political assassinations recently. Both of these facts should speak volumes as to the stability of central america.

I'll tell you one thing for certain. When the US dollar collapses, these 2nd & 3rd world countries... especially Mexico (depends heavily on the dollar obviously) ... well they are going to get hit hard. Don't be surprised if it isn't Venezuela on steroids.

fun story. went hiking to a volcano with a buddy from Israel....a local took us to a "local entrance" and kept repeating it was really dangerous to climb it and that people die all the time. My friend decided to climb it anyway, I went with him. After about an hour and almost being killed by falling rocks I turned back. My friend kept going. Night fell. I found my way to the nearest police station and told them in my broken ass spanish what was up and that friend was possibly dead at the top of the volcano. Within 10 minutes i was in a truck with 4 other cops on a search and rescue for my friend. We found him dehydrated and covered in ash.

This was about 930 pm, no more buses were going to where we lived. the cops gave us a ride to our home an hour away. They asked for nothing. Stop believing everything that they want you to believe.

Michoacan is crazy. Especially the Tierra Caliente region. The port city of Lazaro Cardenas is always under attack too for control

just stating facts.....your president is a silver spoon reality t.v. show clown, your country is a gigantic super commercialized shopping mall, you have no culture with the exception of the rednecks that still exists in the very deep South (and most make fun of them), everything is overpriced, most people are forced to work just to stay afloat, if you get lucky in the lottery, stock market, raffle, etc, the government TAKES about 40%, the list goes and goes bro

Up until recently, was living in San Diego. I was known to visit Tijuana for a time, and for a bit was thinking about living there (at least while I was going to Grad school and using the GI Bill) but...I'm a man of simplicity and would HATE dealing with regularly crossing the border, and certainly some other things - but primarily that.

Quite a few perks down there though. REALLY cheap, immersion that would have probably led to me becoming at least semi fluent in Spanish, Zona Norte (Tijuana's red light district for those unfamiliar), pharmaceuticals if I felt so inclined, etc etc

Been to Mexico many times.

Story Time:

I was on vacation with my family and my buddy in college in Riveria Maya. Rented a car (bad idea) and my Dad ran a red light because they instantly go from green to red. Got pulled over in fukking Mexico. Cop was threatening to take my Dad to prison. I looked back at my buddy and told him we were jumping the cop if he made my Dad get out of the car.

Luckily he just took $100US and fukked off.

It was fukking scary.

Even though that happened I still reallllllly enjoy Mexico. Been on the East and West coasts multiple times. It can be scary but so can anywhere else.

it's only because of the power of the US dollar. Basically an hour of work in the US is worth about 18 here so they get poverty jobs in the US and ship the money back to their families here in Mexico. The government wants to stop it because it threatens the wealth and influence of the US. u woke?
