Because nobody from the land of the free who miscs is broke.

Most have covered January rents/bills, etc, but February is looming. Food, utilities, child-care.. they don't care if you are on furlough from the gov't. You rarely get a break. Mortgage companies *may* do something like lay off the late-fees, but they don't give you a free month of rent or mortgage.

True that furlough gov't employees will get back pay, but that doesn't help them out NOW.
This. Most of the people you see being furloughed are worker bees and generally people who are lower down the ranks like your GS 6 and below. Before miscers try to use this opportunity to insult employees of the federal government (some of whom are still showing up to work without pay because they realize others depend on them for safety), realize this isn’t a problem with federal employees, this is a problem with Americans in general. People across the nation are living paycheck to paycheck and they have no intent to stop. A lot of y’all would be exposed if your job suddenly stopped paying you.

Also, I wouldn’t turn on the news and watch reporters interview people who are suffering because they aren’t being paid and try to come to a conclusion about the plight of ALL the furloughed gov’t workers.

I was also taught that. Enough for 2-3 months of primary expenses. At times I've fell below that threshold though.

Everyone knows this. Most don't have the discipline to do it. Some really do struggle with children on low income and just can't do it.

The latter I can feel bad for, the former no. Although a subset of the latter shouldn't have had kids in the first place.

Isn't this the same with state employees? One dude who worked at the state at my job said he did about half hour's worth of work on any given day and would spend the rest at the basketball court across from their building. And management knew this and didn't care.

State/Federal orgs should function like private companies in the sense that if you don't produce - you're gone. Such wasteful spending, it upsets me as a taxpayer.
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;

I agree 100%. I'm always getting backlash for saying that. I know some things are unexpected and situations can be unfair and tough, but I could not bring a child into the world if I could only provide for myself. Wouldn't be comfortable having one unless I had the means to support 2 of them. They always say you're never ready as a parent, but I'd like to be as ready and prepared as possible. Would never want my child going without.

No. We’re not supposed to strike. But of course they get away with **** like TSA is right now blasting explicit music at airports in protest cause we have a bunch of grown babies as adults and no one holds them responsible for their actions.

I'm sure many do. But those families don't make the news. As well, Christmas and New Year, plus school holidays, these all tend to drop people's savings, and lots of people give or lend money to family and friends at this time of year, so the timing isn't great.

As well, this is just speculation, but... government jobs are pretty secure, generally speaking. And in the US carry decent health and oension benefits. So there'd be a mentality of complacence which people in the less-secure private sector won't have. For example, apart from the army, every job I've had I could have been fired tomorrow. They don't always call it "fired", you're a "casual worker" and they just "cancel shifts." But either way my future income was very uncertain. So I planned and saved and budgeted and all that. Whereas when I was in the army I just pissed it away.

But let's be fair to those federal employees. You should not have to plan against the entire breakdown of your government. Government should be able to settle its issues without shutting the whole fcking thing down. It's a reasonable expectation that they function well enough to pay you while you continue working for them.

The fact is shutdowns can happen, and you need to be prepared for them as a federal employee. So it isn't a reasonable expectation when it doesn't match the current reality.

Lots are independently wealthy so they wouldn't be too bothered. What might work better is what Frederick II did in 1241 when the cardinals couldn't agree on a new Pope: he locked them in a monastery on bread and water until they made a decision.

Lock Congress and Trump up in the Congress building on bread and water until they sort it out. Most of them could stand to drop a few pounds anyway.

If you think that it is a reasonable expectation that on a regular basis your entire federal government will shut down, then you will not long have your Union. The federal government being unable to pay its bills and ceasing to function is how the Soviet Union collapsed.

not sure all of the exact rules on TSP, but it's my understading that you cannot take out a TSP loan when you are on a non-pay status. When the TSP issues you a loan, loan payments are deducted from your pay. Therefore, if you are not receiving pay, you will not be eligible for a TSP loan. you can take out a hardship withdraw from TSP, but that will get taxed hard.

i'm thankful that DoD wasnt affected; the last furloughs i was lucky i had money in the bank saved. if DoD got hit, i'd be screwed. cost of living and housing prices here hawaii is expensive; even though i'm a GS-14, it's still a struggle.

That 3 month thing is "old school" and depending what area that you live in, can be hard to do. DC and the suburbs are expensive as F/K to live in and commuting costs are just as pricey. Depending on what percentage of your costs go to housing/car/utilities/food, there may be little left. A fed can be a secuity guard or tsa 15$/hr on up to 180,000 SES manager.

i agree. i was able to save up easily back when i was single and lived in FL; i had 6 months salary saved up. fast forward to present with wife and two kids, it's damn near it's impossible to save 3 months, especially in high cost of living areas like hawaii, bay area, DC, etc

I was taught 6 months in the bank, bare minimum. Which doesn't include what you have set aside for investment. It's something I will always live by. If I can't maintain that standard then something is seriously wrong. Either not enough coming in, or too much going out.

reasonable expectations for federal employees have changed quite a bit in the past 10 years. 2009 post recession, people were lucky to have jobs. federal govt did a lot of restructuring/downsizing and there were quite a few reduction in force (RIF) where employees lost their jobs. trump's hiring freeze also put the govt in limbo and many had to pick up the slack because of the prolonged vacancies.

one of the percs of being a civil service employment is long term stability and retirement. govt shutdowns and uncertainties are the norm and fed employees should be preparing for the wrose.

Does it occur to you that if it's reasonable to expect that the government may be shut down tomorrow, you no longer have a functioning government? When your government resembles a Third World electricity system with frequent blackouts...

That's how the Soviet Union ended, guys.

That's how the Soviet Union ended, guys.
You need to stop conflating what the current situation is vs. an ideal situation. Twoentirelydifferent topics.

The FACT is, govt shutdowns can happen and your pay can stop temporarily. People are simply arguing that federal employees should be aware of those risks, just like private employees (who can be fired tomorrow).

YUP so true.

I know one that has a new car and a nice house. No kids but looks like she dresses at the dollar store.

just lol , at this essentially being an ego driven shutdown between pelosi/schumer and trump/mcconnell.

those 4 are fukking with all of us, federal employee or not.
i agree with many sentiments on both sides of thisbthread, but just lol if any of us irl could just shut things down if we dont get our way. those people are disconnected from our planet.
