You are bringing up the outliers as if your example is the norm. MOST college professors reuse old powerpoints over and over and use scantrons to grade the class then act as if they are high and mighty. I was a STEM major and my professors were all smart but they were unnecessarily standoffish and arrogant.

People that work at airports seem to think that everyone there has been to that airport as much as them and that everyone is as stupid as them.

Here I got a few, enjoy brahs:

Catholic priest - act like their job is to help you please an imaginary god so you can live forever in the sky, while their real intent is to distract you while they rape your children.
Source: try reading the news if you need a source for this one.

Engineers - act like they're all elite scientists but all they did was barely pass some chit that they don't truly understand just so they can rot behind a desk working excel sheets all day.
Source: EE crew from top tier research university here in southern cali, I know these things.

Firefighters - if we didn't dupe low level prison inmates to do most of our firefighting here in CA half the state would be an ashtray by now.
Source: won't go into it due to nda, but trust me on this one.

Because you have absolutely no idea what their job entails. At most research institutions, the professors are probably spending <10% of their time teaching. What you see is a fraction of what they do. I’ve never known a successful professor, tenured or other, who works less than 50 hours a week. Most are 60-70 easy.

Ya idk why people are saying teachers, my gf is a 4th grade teacher and she has a chit ton of work to do. One of my teachers teaches, flys around the country given presentations (she was in Atlanta this past week), works on a grant for the city of LA in dentistry, plus alot more chit that I don't even know about.

Being an elementary teacher now is 10 times as hard as it was 20 years ago. 20 years ago we would have movies days semi-often, now my gf has to give standardised tests every 6-7 days for the entire year.

Also idk where ppl got the average pay for teachers is 80k, its more like 55k and thats after you have worked a number of years.

This guy (who's married to a teacher) did an interesting analysis titled, "the Myth of the Underpaid teacher"

http://www.michaelrobertson.com/arch...?minute_id=357

Cliffs:

* They're negotiated to only work 181 days per year. (wut?)

* They have an insanely generous retirement/pension system that pays back 80-90% of their highest salary, and they can retire at 55, collect it until they die. They can also allot for it to go to their spouse until their spouse dies.

* School days are from 8am to 2:30pm, in that timeframe they get their own mandated teacher time and lunch time off. With 6.5 hour work days, even an extra 1.5 hours per day would just put them at a normal 8 hour day range.

* They still get great medical coverage

Article

The Myth of the Underpaid Teacher

San Diego Unified School District, the second largest school district in California, is perilously close to insolvency (this is the equivalent of bankruptcy for government services). A local online news outlet Voice of San Diego asked me to author an editorial as they focus on the dismal state of education. Below is my contribution.

Since I took my 5 year old to the local government school to begin his formal education there's been a constant barrage about the plight of the teacher. "They are underpaid." "They are overworked." "They pay for their own supplies." Our local public school has a teacher appreciate week - yes an entire week. Parents are assigned to bring different foodstuffs each day capped off with a gift to which all parents are pressured to contribute cash to purchase. What I've always found puzzling is that the facts around the teaching profession seem to tell a vastly different story. While many people believe teachers are greatly underpaid, the compensation is quite substantial. After many months of demands I was able to secure payroll information for my local district DMUSD. The average teacher's direct cash compensation is $73,000 which exceeds the average entire household income for San Diego county residents of $60,103 (data from US census).

To gain a complete picture on teacher salary one must examine other financial benefits the largest being a lucrative retirement program. Every district employee gets a guaranteed pension which when they retire will pay them 80-90% of their highest salary every year until they die. They can also elect to accept less and their spouse can receive the benefit even if they die. That teacher making $73,000 today will get 80-90% of their final salary number which will be as high as $95,000. They are eligible for retirement beginning at the age of 55.

This retirement program is dramatically more generous than Social Security which most Americans receive. Current middle-age working social security recipients are slated to to receive only 76 cents for every dollar taken from their paycheck. However because teacher's unions negotiated a guaranteed pension amount they are receiving 10-20 times any contribution they make in future retirement payments. To pay this obligation 36% of their total salary needs to be put into an interest bearing account each month. Teachers are contributing 8% leaving 28% to be paid by taxpayers. If the monies are not set aside (which they are not) then they will not be able to grow until retirement meaning that even more money will be required to be paid later. Teachers receive a pension benefit that is worth conservatively $25,000 per year. Since teachers can retire 10-12 years earlier than Social Security allows payments start a decade or more earlier than US workers and teachers pay even less into their retirement accounts than SS recipients.

Unions have negotiated top of the line medical coverage for their teacher members. For DMUSD (which is not dissimilar from other districts) this means $8800 per year in health insurance. This is an additional payment by the district and does not come out of the paycheck as is common in most other jobs. Beginning at 55 retirees can begin receiving their retirement and still have the district pay for their full medical until age 65.

Also negotiated is a calendar work year that limits teachers to 181 work days. Most Americans work 245 days per year meaning teachers get nearly 13 weeks more vacation time than the typical US worker. The days teachers do work the day starts at 8 and ends at 2:30 during that time period there are mandated breaks, non-teaching period and lunch. Schools are prohibited from demanding that teachers work more than those hours. That's only 6.5 hours per day so if teachers are voluntarily working longer that would be moving them closer to the typical 8 hour work day.

With light work obligations, pay greater than the average household income, early retirement and luxurious pension payouts teaching is undeniably a well paid occupation. An economic analysis reveals that teachers at government run schools are overpaid by 52% when compared with comparably skilled workers at corporations. This translates to taxpayers paying an additional $120 billion per year.

Some may brand me as anti-teacher for revealing these facts about teacher compensation. I married a teacher so if anything I have a soft spot for teachers. It should be noted that administration personnel (what they call in education lingo 'non-certified') enjoy similar economic benefits. I emphasize teachers because too often the myth of the underpaid and overworked teacher is used to deflect scrutiny from the largest expense of running a school - personnel costs. Many scour tiny budget items looking to squeeze pennies from small sources while the true driver of expenses: employees and benefits are ignored.

In the next year, personnel costs (teachers and administrators) are slated to be 102% of the entire SDUSD school budget. As in most organizations, human capital is the biggest expense and reconciling the budget means a blunt analysis of salaries and benefits using an unemotional factual analysis. Teachers deserve no better treatment than a janitor or nurse or secretary or administrator. Each is supporting a family being paid for by other taxpayers. Undoubtedly, the most unpleasant part of managing an organization is implementing terminations, pay reductions, and benefit cuts. Yet, it is the only way to achieve financial rationalization for the district. To date, the school board has not shown the leadership to make such decisions and for that inaction they will likely lose their job. Whoever eventually is appointed to lead the district in its own austerity program will have to adjust personnel costs, yes, even for teachers.

Of course, you will run into arrogant kunts, but that's a given in any environment on earth. People love to think they are above others, but buddy, do you even know how difficult it is to get a PhD ? It is very difficult.
I think the issue is moreso that their teaching sure as hell doesn't seem to involve using much of that field knowledge and experience. I respect them for getting PhD's and yes they are the top of their echelons, but most profs regurgitate the same shyt every year, from a textbook some other group of profs wrote or they may have contributed to, use publisher slides, and a lot just spend all class sharing "back in my day" stories, and give predominantly scantron based exams.

I honestly think, aside from the research and office hours, a lot of students could do the job of a prof. Study the publisher slides, regurgitate the material from slides in class with no changes, and give a scantron exam that you didn't even design but instead used simple random sampling to pick from a test bank.

Damn. I didn't know sales and being a doctor was an easy job. They are two jobs where you can earn a 1% level of income.

More than likely >95% of people in here have <100k in liquid asset right now.

Since sales and being a doctor are so easy & majority of you are broke, what's stopping anyone here from doing these easy jobs that are paid very well and improving your life situation?

Any profession or market segment which relies heavily on "survivorship bias" as a means of self-promotion/rationalization.

#1 Tradies.

Never in all my life have I seen such survivorship bias used to justify their life choices and try to mitigate others choices (most notably, college grads).

Brb: I never went to college and I or insert someone they know makes a hundred grand a year or owns their own company makes *insert statistically improbable and non-empirically backed number like 60K a month*. There is always an outrageous borderline cliche assertion backed with no evidence or rationale logic.

I'm not trying to slam trades... most are solid livings. But the levels that trades try to romanticize back-breaking, low-respect, undesirable, low-tier career paths is beyond cringe.

Sales is an extremely easy job. In fact its one that I used to do. The 1% sales jobs are given to people with excellent networking skills. I've known salesman who made over 100k in a low income state doing basically nothing except 9 or 10 big sales per year with business that already have been buying from the same company for years. These jobs are always given to friends or friends of friends. Sales can be stressful when commission based but its not hard as long as you have decent people skills

How about you actually get over 90% in every task set out for you, for every semester, then come back to me with this same response.

The truth is that college and university is absurdly hard when you're a top student; Other wise known as the only type of student that counts, since your average person that goes to college is just there for the experience, attaining enough knowledge, discipline, and competence, to transition into a technical role with greater ease; not to actually make a huge difference in the world.

The professors are there for those TOP-TIER students.
well that's interesting, I didn't really consider that but I think it might matter where you live as well. In my program (accounting/finance), most people seem to get good jobs because of a co-op program, networking, case competitions, or straight getting lucky. I have some friends who have jobs at Big 4 or places like BDO (next step down) and they barely scratch the surface of the program requirements in terms of grades. So idk I think it depends on the field too, sometimes you can get a good job even with average-ish grades if your program is good.

I don't necessarily agree that it's absurdly hard if you're a top student, certainly not for every such student. I think it's a combination of IQ/intelligence and hard work and time management. I have a friend who "accidentally" (his words) got over 90 in every course last semester in a 4th year accounting program...He barely studies for anything. He works at Big 4 and only does so because of his co-op program and grades, profs had little to do with it. Pretty much makes the Dean's honour list every year. Last semester I had over an 80 average and it wasn't that much more work than usual despite being in 4th year, but I also probably have a high-ish IQ. Haven't been officially tested but scored around 130 on iqtest.dk and queendom.com, among the 2 most reliable sites for IQ testing.

Talking to people like him and others who are straight 90 students, and talking to profs, it doesn't seem like profs do much with regards to recruitment, at least here in Ontario in a large university.
