Declining fertility rates and people choosing to have children later on in life due to it taking longer to be able to be financially viable to start a family is pretty much decreasing the birth rate in most developed countries and Japan is no different.

or that enlightened societies realize they don't just need to pump out kids, putting further drain on already scarce land and resources. As I said above, if there is a sudden or gradual dip in population, the society will equalize and then increase or decrease naturally.

Having an increased birthrate costs NOTHING, you just have to have sex without protection, that's it. Some of the chittyest poorest countries always seem to be find having heaps of children.

Japan could start offering incentives for full time company workers to start banging their wives or husbands, like subsidies, payouts, company daycare and hospital plans.

I've known a few. If peopleplanto have children they tend to plan to get married first. But not everyone who gets married, or who lives together as married (the term "de facto" seems to have declined in favour of "partner"), wants children. Like going to uni straight out of high school, and the mortgage once married, to some extent having children is what people do simply because everyone else does. I've a friend who's made a fortune from writing books where he tells couples to, once a month, have a financial "date night", and discuss their finances and goals.

Many people never discuss things with their spouse, they never have those awkward conversations where they admit that they really do want children after all, or actually really don't, or they can't be arsed with a mortgage, or actually they'd rather just work part-time, or whatever. They don't discuss things, just go ahead and do what everyone else does, and then one day crack the shts and fck their secretary, or piss off to India to live laugh love.

Anyway, lots of couples never have children. These are a balance to all the broken families out there, all the unplanned babies from unwed couples.

This is also a big reason. On the other hand, the earth is overpopulated with humans, so fewer is only a good thing.

Too bad certain regions are super productive when it comes to children (Middle east, Africa) while Europe and Japan are not. So maybe 50 years from now we'll see big demographic changes, especially in Europe.

Actually, it's too many men in the office - the women see no point in marrying since they won't see the guy anyway.

When you guys get nostalgic for the 50s, what you forget is that the man spent a lot of time at home, too. Ward Cleaver was home every night for dinner, he spent time with his kids and wife. He wasn't doing unpaid overtime then going out for drinks to suck up to his boss.

This is why the 50s had a baby boom, and modern Japan can't get women to marry and have kids.

japan is probably a lot like the USA. if you take a kid with you somewhere you get dirty looks everywhere you go. who wants to raise a kid in that kind of environment? Having a child is considered low class in westernized societies. I couldn't take my kids anywhere until they turned 5 without some childless ass hole telling me or my wife we were doing something wrong.
