Most women in Japan work, are highly educated, and wealth is pretty prominent in all ranges of Japan's society. They don't need a man.
People own their own places, take vacations, have retirement, and medical insurance.
Robots and AI do a lot for Japan's society (much more than US/EU/Asian countries).
They don't allow immigration from the 3rd world.
The legal system crushes men in divorce proceedings. Men are intelligent to not be married to women; so they don't marry.
Marriage is an integral part of Japanese society when it comes to having children. Shame/Honor is still a big thing in Japan. It is shameful to be unwed and have children.
The balance between honoring society but not being a puppet to a corrupt sexist legal system makes men decline marriage.
You end up with a bifurcated and declining populace at that point. Should you have kids? Sure. Do you want to get ****ed over after working 40 years? No. Is society willing to accept unwed families in Japan? No.
Japan is fine without having kids though in mass. They're using technology to fill the labor shortage. More automation in blue-collar fields and more roboticization in labor fields allows old people to do work and "no one" to do work where you required less inclined toward softskills/education "people" in the past.
Basically Japan doesn't need lots of kids. "Peak Child" hit in the 90's for Japan and they'll never have as many kids as they did back then in Japan.
South Korea is actually declining faster than Japan. Fun fact.
