I have a love/hate relationship with most of this stuff. Do I miss bringing home the latest new release from the movie store? Phuck yes. Do I miss paying $4 per movie and another $4 if I don't bring it back within 1-2 days? Phuck no.
Do I miss cable TV? Yes. Do I miss more than half of it being commercials and having to pay a lot more to see PPVs and movies? No.
Do I miss the Internet as it was in 2000? Yeah, I do. Some might not. YouTube is an incredible resource, but we had Limewire and Kazaa for all that. I do NOT miss having to convince my mom to install a second phone line so I could use my 28.8Kbps connection uninterrupted.

Some complain about having to go to Blockbuster and find a movie was more work but it made watching a movie more special and it was a social thing. Picking it out, bringing it home, putting it in your VCR, then looking forward to going again to get another movie.
Now we have streaming but it just doesn't seem as special as going to Blockbuster on a Friday night
Same with video games, now there is matchmaking and most people play alone....but back then you would gather and hang out with friends and all play together
Or connecting to the internet and waiting for the modem. I still remember the sound. It wasn't as fast or advanced but it seemed more fun for some reason. It didn't consume our lives like it does now, it was just a part of it. Now you can access the internet from your phone and everywhere which is awesome but it created its own problems.
I think it comes down to we have gotten spoiled and consumed

Thankful I got to be a kid during the 90s.
Society is completely in the gutter nowadays and getting worse every year.
Nothing seems to get better, just gradually worse and worse. The economy, the political spectacle, the cultural decay, the environmental destruction.
And yet if you come out and say this you're immediately branded a pessimist, a cynic, and told to be more optimistic and hopeful.
As if just ploughing forward in the face of imminent catastrophe is something to be optimistic about. Exactly the kind of thinking that brought about the 07-08 financial meltdown, which incidentally is when the systemic rot really seemed to accelerate. Or maybe the illusion just started to wear off.
Agree with some posters in here, 2000 was the peak, 01-08 were years of decay, yet the illusion of normalcy remained somewhat intact, 08 it shattered, and ever since it's just been a gradual descent downwards.

90s were cool because even though there was the internet and video games ... kids still spent a decent chunk of time outside. That is not something you see much at all today.
Now my parents said in the 50's/60's if you'd see swarms of kids outside 24/7 when not in school. Interesting how tech has slowly destroyed standard human interaction.
80's and 90's in general were GOAT. Fkn millennium approaching and so much new technology things revolutionizing the world. It's almost a historical privilege to have been alive during that time/transition. Being around for the birth of the internet, cell phones, first person shooters, MMOs, eCommerce, space shuttle program, Babe Ruth / Maris record being broken, Spielberg cinematic history, etc... EPIC.

This is what philanthropists like Bill Gates understand (with quotes such as it's the same burger after that). And that is why they devote their time to aiding poor countries. Because what is there left to do really?

Probably biased but when I was in high school (Bill Burr has a similar bit on this) tech was the best. Cell phones made calls and texts. Games were great. No mainstream social media. So glad I didn't grow up with a smart phone. It's creepy seeing kids be born with this tech from day one.

1) Dopamine receptors are much fresher as a child/teenager - so you enjoy everything a lot more. Just like how drugs are great initially for users then tolerance builds.
2) Memory is a great filter. As long as you had a good past, your memory filters out all of the bad stuff. So you recall all the "good ol times" and forget the crappy part of it.
3) Being younger with no responsibility is always more fun than having duties and working long hours.
The couple things that have definitely changed though are that kids don't play outside as much and that social media creates an unrealistic exposure to people's top moments.
