Here’s the real question to me
If this virus spreads like it did in China, Iran, and Italy, what is the usa going to do?
Are we also going the quarantine route?
If we do, what implications to the economy/market?

Srs question, OP (and any other trader brahs). If you know the market will drastically drop the next day, can't you just short several stocks and benefit? Or is it difficult to open short positions in such a "panic" situation?

Its risky because the market always favors going up and you can lose infinite cash when shorting.

If quarantines were to shut down enough of the country like in China and Italy, absolute bloodbath.

Any of you boyos familiar with Vanguard 401k offerings? I went to money markets before the crash, looking to maximize the gains when I buy back in. Officially will be allowed to as of tomorrow (30 day delay window), but I expect more downside so I just want to be prepared.

The other option would be take it as a loan and invest in the next down payment for another multifamily, but I don't like being at risk like there where if employment changes I suddenly have tax exposure.

This won't be worse than 2008.

The marked tanked in 2008 because of policies going back decades, into the Clinton administration. The subprime mortgage crisis was a fundamentally flawed system that was just building up and up and preparing for a major disaster. It was like having a cog stuck in a wheel. The wheel could no longer turn unless you ripped that cog out and ****ed everything up for a good while, which eventually happened.

With this situation, there is a clear reason why the market is going down. Nobody wants to leave their house because if the virus. If they don't leave, no money gets spent and nobody works.

The second this virus is resolved, the market is going to rocket back up. This could be next month, or Christmas. But now is an amazing buying opportunity.
Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesn’t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesn’t mean anything either.

Wait, wait... So you're telling me that since 2008 they haven't propped up the markets with QE 1, 2, 3 and 4 (soon) and slashed rates to sub-zero in order to band-aid what would have crashed and burned instead if they didn't do all that back in 2008?

I think we'll see in the next week or 2 the impacts of factories being shut down in China. Cheap plastic will be tough to come by.

Sure but this crash isn't because of the FED's policy.

- We were already due to a correction since stock markets reached new records
- Corona media caused panic
- Saudi Arabia saying **** you to Russia this weekend

This is not a structural crisis. (in the long term it is, but that's not for now...)

It is absolutely a structural crisis. This has been a crisis in the works for the last 11 years and now it's being triggered by the coronavirus. Doesn't matter what the trigger is, but it's been triggered.

Central banks have dug a hole for themselves and they're not gonna be able to dig themselves back out.

Yes there are structural problems but that is not the cause of this crisis, Corona is not the trigger it is the crisis + oil war between russia and saudi arabia.

But let's follow your theory, this will be worse than 08 then? Where will this end?

Sure feels like it IMO. All these countries seemingly overreacting 10X over what the threat really is, feels like a massive overreaction.

I get the virus is dangerous, but shutting a whole country;s schools down for an entire month?! That and some other measures taken just feel soo incredibly overly cautious to me, feels contrived af.

The media is hyping THE FUKK outta this virus which makes me 100000% more skeptical of the real threat, we're all very aware the media and the LEft would fuking LOVE for the market to crash and stay down until December. havent watched any media, but I would guess theyre screeching this is the end of the world and Trump isnt doing anything and he sucks blah blah blah. Soo manufactured its sickening

When this all blows over, it will disappear from the airwaves overnight and the media will act like they never hyped it as the end of the world. Just watch.

Very true. At least in 2007-2008, the fed could lower interest rates from 5.25%. Today they're at 1.5% and have ballooned their balance sheet to $4 trillion.

Helicopter money is probably coming, as it is the only thing they have left. Agree with a previous poster that inflation and negative rates are locked in.

This system is rotten to the very core.

Not to make this into a corona thread, but just offering some FA insight. Been following this since very early January. In the begging there was virtually zero media hype. There were articles mentioning a new virus in China, but no hysteria and no real attention and concern for the drastic actions China was taking. Remember that before the world was calling for action, China was shutting down entire cities, spraying disinfectant in the air all around Wuhan with massive aerosol machines, and building makeshift hospitals. That all happened voluntarily by the CCP with no media hype and no pressure from the outside world. China literally shot their economy in both feet and then some.

Why did they do that? Was it contrived? Or was it a proportionate reaction to the threat? Just something to consider.

It was surreal watching all of that happen in China while having little to no press coverage in the US.

Actually made me think it was even worse than it looked because usually I'd expect the media response that knightofday is talking about. I guess we're finally at that point but it remains to be seen if it's warranted or not.
