age of pisces is from 1 to 2000 AD and Jesus was supposedly born right around 3BC coinciding with the start of this age which is represented by faith and religion (notice how structured religion basically dominated for the past 2000 years). now we are supposedly in or transitioning into the next Age of Enlightenment represented by focus on technology/information and global awareness, so one could say the internet which represents all those things is the force that brings in the new age.

The early internet was populated by people that had social skills they had acquired and developed in real life. The ability to debate, actively listen, maintain composure and give respect(face to face you cannot get away with the **** people get away with online). You were often engaging with your peer group that knew you much more intimately because you were going to school or working with them, and the details of your life were better known. You could still lie and exaggerate, but the payoff was much smaller. To be fair the consequences were, too.

This was reflected in the early forms of social media, namely real-time chat rooms and longform message boards like the Misc. Trolling for interesting chatrooms was a logical extension of going to the neighborhood park to see who was there, or a club/bar if you were older. Forums were a place that welcomed walloftext communication because people actually had conversations versus talking past each other to score points. No like or heart buttons to give you that high number dopamine hit.

Now not only do we have technology that has put the internet in the palm of our hands, but we have a generation whose social life has been molded there. Memes as shorthand and symbolism dominate communication.

The ability to debate with well thought out arguments that are more than a couple hundred characters seems to be more rare. People lose their composure and show no respect because the lack of face to face communication allows us to turn our opposition into who we want them to be rather than who they are, because we don't know them. We can embellish and fabricate any and every detail and people won't know. More experienced and mature people may be harder to fool, but these kids and very young adults are incredibly naive.

I am very thankful I was born before the internet and witnessed it ushered into society. The ability to see the difference is lacking in this next generation. I feel bad for them, srs.

Yeah bro it sucks. I’m no better though. I’m a hopeless internet addict and I think I’ve developed some kind of disorder from it. It’s all fun and games trolling on the misc and wasting time but I can’t focus anymore without constant stimulation.

Five years ago I was not like this, I was actually able to read books and desired to socialize with my friends and family. Now I’m just drowning in apathy. Almost no desire to do anything.

You know, it's easy to stop it as yourself. In my life I find myself using a flip phone as a main phone when going out. Tells the time and lets me text and call. Wow!

Whatever your life situation was back in 2010, just do that. That's the approach that has come to me as 2nd nature on accident. (Just so happens I like it this way)
