It's definitely not in great shape, but way better shape than for the price I paid for it. It was 90% original parts when I bought it....you can see from the pics that it definitely needs work but from what I understand the guy that sold it to me had bought it with the intentions of fixing it up to race and just didnt have time.....he had a whole shop with like 4-5 other cars, 2 kids under 10 and a full time job.

The Buick Skylark isnt really in the same class of desirability as the cars you mentioned.....there are other guys in this area selling LITERALLY the mildly rusted out body/frame Chevelle's.....no motor, no trans and completely fukked interiors for $10k. Some guy around her also wants like $45k for his mostly original (in great shape though) that's looks like it just been repainted Cuda.

Thera are 2 other Skylarks in the area for sale in the same $$ range as what I paid for mine and neither of them run and their interiors are completely shot and they have considerably more rust. It's kind of nice to know that...especially once I get the new suspension installed......I could sell it for around $12k-$13k....and currently (counting the price of the car) I'm into it for about $8k

In all honesty I think this is the way I'm going to go. Looking at a cam/heads swap and maybe a EFI set-up for just a fukkin torque monster.

That single turbo 5.3 set-up is looking reaaaaaaal tempting though....knowing I could fund it by selling the 402, the 455 & the TH350. A turbo LS backed by a build TH400 (that I already have) would be sick.

-Took out old springs (which had spacers in them to jack up the rear-end)
-Installed new rear springs (1"drop springs) Shocks, all new upper and lower polyurethane control arm bushings (not installed in the pic)
-Put the wheels back on and oops.......fender lip is sitting on the tire. Rims on the rear are 15x10 not sure on the backspacing, but it's not right. lol. Tire is 275/60/15
-Still have to install front suspension mods....that's the plan for this weekend.

Rims and Tires have officially moved up to the next mod on the list. Car is currently undriveable. FML.....Car probably still has another 1/4-1/2 inch to drop but is literally sitting on the tire. I like the way it's sitting, just gotta get that tire in. lol

Ordered new rims, nothing special....just some Chevy Rally Wheels 15x10 for the rear with 5.5" backspacing, that I'm going to plastidip black....should be here this week. Taking them to get tires mounted this weekend and hopefully everything fits nicely. They should from my research and measurements.

The rims I REALLY wanted are on backorder (everywhere) till July and I'm not waiting. lol

Wife is going out of town, so me and the pup will be getting all greasy installing new front suspension parts Saturday. Will hopefully have it sitting right and back on the road.

Wife went out of town this weekend. Finished up with the yard and was bored....and about 6 cold snacks deep, so decided to apply some more plastidip to the car while waiting to get the new rear tires mounted on the new rims.

I really like how it turned out. Still have to do the other side.

Had a couple hours free this weekend....threw on the new front sway bar. Haven't even put on the new shocks/springs on the front and this car already forgot that it's 50 years old. Holy chit at the difference in handling from just that beefy front Sway bar. I'm super stoked for this project again.

Got the new rims/tires mounted. Rims look better than I thought they would (bought them as a quick/cheap fix originally) but I'll be buying the same set for the front soon. Probably going to plasitdip them black and see how that looks....but I really like how it sits/looks now.

Thinking about looking into a Heads/Cam combo and going with a Holley Sniper EFI for the 455. Will probably take a bit of a break from it for bit.....we've got some serious projects in the backyard we need to get done.

Sick garage before and after.............Long story short, I sold the car.

We've got our 1st kid on the way and I figured the responsible thing to do was to ditch the money/time pit and assemble a home gym as I'm sure my and my wife's time is going to be pretty restricted over the next 2-15 years. lol

When I got realistic with myself, I realized that the car isn't exactly what I want (though I did love it) and it's going to take another $10k and more time than I have to get it there. Oh well.....I got what I wanted for it, Im good.....on to the next life project.

I dunno, kind of used the baby as a good reason to ditch it. I liked the car and enjoyed it, but I didn't love it and it wasn't what I truly wanted and I knew that to get it to what I wanted... I wasn't willing to invest the time or money. I'd rather drop $20k on a ready to go Vette or something.

I have a problem of being kind of a "dreamer" about projects sometimes and this was one of those times......I watch too much YouTube and have a fulltime job and other projects that are more of a priority right now. I'd have 15 cars if I had the time/space.

I'm not out of the car game, just sitting on the sidelines for a bit.

Yea, and unfortunately it was kind of a "never meet your hero" type of situation. I knew cars were different back then, but this just had a ton of attitude/character and none of the go. lol...and while it was raw and an experience every time I took it out, it was just lacking and after getting the suspension where I wanted and realizing I was probably going to have to go modded 6.0 LS & a T56 for what I wanted out of it.....I knew it was time to let it go.

A father & son duo from Atlanta bought it...they've got a restoration business and have plans to do a pretty decent resto on it. Made me feel good about letting it go.

I've had the gym set up for about 4 days and I've used it every day so far......way better than the 1-2x/week we were making it to gym in town.

Assuming you didn't read the whole thread....which I guess I don't expect you to.....

Long story short there was a plan, plan changed, I get impatient/bored/hit with realizations of real life......and I decided to let it go and I'd be better off sitting on the sidelines for a couple years to get through the first few years with a kid and not have 1/2 my garage taken up by something that I really don't love, that needs more time than Im willing to commit to it and more work than I want to do on something that I dont TRULY love. And for the next chapter in my life, that space will be better suited by a home gym set up to save time..... then in 2-3 years when life settles down again, I'll drop $20k on what I REALLY want.

I bought the car for $6k
Dropped just under $3k in interior reno/suspension/tires/here & there chit
Sold it for $10,500
Owned it for 10 months.

...and it wasn't a waste of time. I love working on cars/getting dirty/wrenching......and it's always been a dream of mine to own and work on a muscle car..... I did it and now I can cross it off my list.

OP did as much as a brah could do without going into 10s of thousands.
Original untouched classics are money pits, if you go looking for rust and rot you will find it on them. Sills, door panels, window seals etc, anything with a cavity that has condensation or water forming at the bottom of it.
Unless you have sandblasting equipment , can fabricate and access to spray boots etc its going to cost a lot to bring it up to top spec. That's not getting into transmission and engine issues.

Nostalgia comes at a price.

Yeah, I had a similar experience with an old LC. Looked cool and everything but what a nightmare to drive these old heaps of crap. Swerving all over the road with giant mud tires, half the time doesn't start in the mornings, no comfort, engine has 0 power. Props to all petrolheads who can drive these old cars but there's nothing like sitting in a new-ish 600bhp corvette and just enjoying the bleeding edge engineering work.

That was most of the cars back then TBH.

I think the fastest GM A-body was the 70 454 Chevelle, and its about as fast as a modern Honda Accord sedan.

Yeah you didn't have a plan. You had the car for less than a year lol. You were also disappointed with the power. Why were you expecting much out of a 70s $6000 muscle car?

I'm not roasting you, just saying your idea of buying a complete car is better for you going forward.

BillHendricks probably has the right idea.
Sometimes is best to just get a newer Challenger/Charger and call it a day. I like the 5th gen Camaros too.

I love Chevelles but to properly build one and make it DD is probably gonna close $60k minimum.
