Proper nutrition is part of the training with this surgery, in no small part because it's easier to become deficient in things when the volume of food consumed drops drastically as your stomach is physically much smaller post-surgery

A bit does come back over time but it's nothing compared to diet and exercise where people gain back all short-term weight loss and end up bigger after a year or two. I think you need to really mess up to gain everything back when your stomach becomes so much smaller, but it can be done with liquid calories

while i do love this concept, japanese ans chinese people arent fat and their cities are even worse for bikes. its not really a solution, its more of an ingredient.

the problem is the available food and the culture kf not only fat acceptance but of fat promotion

About the soda thing... every single "rich girl" diet program that is expensive and at a nutrition center, requires that you drop all soda with a focus on DIET SODA.
Go figure.

Nothing will change until we go back to a MALE driven social order, rather than our current female driven social order. Female driven social orders prioritize feelings over facts, subjectivity over objectivity, emotionalism vs rationalism.

Once that is done, the problem will fix itself, as it is an OBJECTIVE fact that being fat has so many downsides I'm not even going to list them here, and it's entirely 100% in every individual's control. There is simply no excuse for it.

imagine raising a child in a pedestrian friendly country..... it would be fuking incredible.
the suburbs may be able to accommodate some bike infradtrucutre, to make suburbs more manuverable, but if commutes with a 10-20 minute drive to work including time spent on a highway, are they going to want to use an bike and add even more commuting time onto that? I think thats where the biggest issue lies.

I think the only reason we do that in america, is because our infrastructure sucks dick for walking/cycling. You walk along a sidewalk with a 45mph speed limit and feel like you will die at any minute. If ped paths were seperate, or at least had railings to seperate the cars from the pedestrians, people would actually use them.
Our built environment has been created to serve cars and to "keep out the riff raff". Cities ripped out tram systems to make more space for roads. Public transportation was marginalized as something that is only for poor people and some places actively opposed investment in public transportation because they didn't want to encourage minority residency. Large swaths of land were zoned "single family residential" for a similar reason- row houses and apartments were "old fashioned" and for people that couldn't afford their own little postage stamp with a free standing house.

yeah because wider roads solves traffic problems.lmao.
I believe that sometimes increased lane miles makes more sense. I-35 near me is flat out unsafe. High volume interstate running in and out of a metro area that has grown from something like 2 million people to 7 million people and they still left it only 2 regular lanes northbound and 2 regular lanes southbound.

Worth a try. Already mentioned but we could:

- stop subsidizing low nutrient food
- subsidize/promote whole foods
- tax "added sugar" [this one is mine]

I suggested a tax on added sugars on a left leaning website around the time Obama was elected [maybe before] and got shut down over how awful and unfair that would be.

sugar tax = a penny per gram of added sugars* [all types] per package

Because sugar is sure as hell not necessary to life.

Because it would probably cause food companies to reformulate their products to lower the sugar content.

And because a consumer can ADD MORE SUGAR if they want to, but good luck taking it out.

It all starts in the home. The parents need to initiate and keep it. The more people that take personal responsibility and control of their life, the more it compounds. Then all these companies have to shift gears.

Can't blame companies for something you have control over. No one wants to take responsibility for their lives anymore.

most of the construction is already done in places like LA. Just close some 2 lane roads to cars and make those areas pedestrian-only. Some of the more elaborate dutch-style paths can be implemented at the time construction is forced to resurface roads (roughly every 17 years)

other bicycle paths can be implemented along water drainage systems, or old railways that are no longer in use.

LA is such an easy example because the traffic there is so horrific, and the weather is so nice.... The very fact that socal has been built around the automobile just shows how low-IQ americans are.

true, and if you're going to argue for public transit, it MUST BE FASTER THAN DRIVING. The motivation for using public transit should be more than "I can't afford a car"... you need people who own bentleys to want to use some form of train because it's way faster than driving from the burbs.

I used to bike all over Philly.

You have to be in good shape to cover distances and on top of that, it's hard to wear normal clothes.

Philly is full of hills and you need to have the body to handle that. For one job I had to wear a suit and I used to bike around in that, which is ridiculous. Most jobs I can wear jeans and they hurt my testicles while biking. So, I used to wear tights and then bring clothes in my backpack.

It's too much.

Meanwhile, I loved visiting hospitals in center city because a small area that's flat is great for biking.

The last time I did that was when the Pope came to Philly. Then, all of the streets were closed and I could bike anywhere. On that day---I got a flat and then had to carry my bike a couple of miles on my back. That day killed biking for me, and now I don't like it much.

Bikes are not reliable or usable for many people.

There's a lot of solutions to your problems regarding flats, and riding would be way better if the infrastructure was there.

I am talking about things we can do now.

For instance, I have a hybrid bike and thought I would get solid tires. I found out that bike tires tend to go flat for people 250 and over. I am 250 and so I think that's why I have been getting a lot of flats over the years. Anyway, I shopped for solid tires but could not find them.

Bikes are not for all people sadly. I love riding them but they can be annoying.

In addition, they are for either light people who are skinny or very rugged people. You aren't going to have older women and whatnot risking a fall and so on.

Also, the infrastructure is not there and as I've noted, in the US it would take literally hundreds of years to change anything. Our cities are not maintained let alone radically changed in any normal amount of time.

Most of you are too young to remember, but I was around when people used to smoke like crazy, at work, in restaurants, while doing sports, and it was kind of amusing. It was also heinous as you could not eat without sitting in clouds of smoke.

I recall one of my favorite pizza places in PA was so smokey you would come up from eating literally saturated with smoke, like you wanted to throw your clothes away and your skin had a greasy film.

I am not kidding.

The media destroyed smoking and probably made all of you think smoking is like heroin.

Smoking is not addictive at all in my experience. It's a psychological habit. I can smoke all day and feel next to nothing BUT the media made people THINK it was disgusting, dangerous, addictive, and so on. I once told a little girl I was friends with that I smoke a cigarette once in a while and so told me her teacher said people like me are evil! I'm a bad person.

Of course, she was my friend's daughter and I treated her like a princess. However, the media and her insane teacher said that I am a bad person because I will smoke a cigarette.

For decades there were nonstop commercials about how bad, crazy, stupid, etc it is to smoke.

If you did that with obesity, where little girls think you're evil for being fat, that would destroy obesity.

However, the government/rich people benefit from having a fat population. If everyone were super fit and on gear, that would not go well.

I do not know.

Basic policies against the toxic jungle of processed foods seems essential for most.

More important, I think comparing places without this problem to places with the problem reveals what actually makes a difference.

It seems cultural. If everyone shares the experience, surrounding eating, the culture seems to avoid dysfunction.
