Yes, I’m saying that a country with the population and resources as big as ours, with the strong athletic tradition we have, would absolutely be the best if it was the popular sport, rather than it being a 6th or 7th most popular sport. 1. Baseball? You mean America’s pastime? We have by far the most professional baseball players of any country, and any time we actually put together our best players we win internationally. The only reason we sometimes lose to Japan is because a. They take much more pride in their national team than we do, and b. Because most of our best players don’t actually play in international tournaments to avoid risking injury.

2. Hockey? We have the 2nd most players in the nhl by nationality. Canada has 40%, we have 28%. Sweden is 3rd with 9%. Obviously Finland and Sweden punch above their weight considering the size of their countries, but that comes down to the point. The sheer size of the us means that even when we don’t prioritize that sport(hockey isn’t super popular here), we still put out more players into the pros than almost any other country on earth.

Actually, it does matter how many professional athletes we have if the best players from all over the world come to our league to play. Having the 2nd most players by far in the best league in the world means that we have the 2nd largest talent pool of the top players in the world. It’s a pretty simple concept really.

Canada has the most top hockey talent in the world, USA has the second most. Sweden, Russia, and Finland are in a distant 3rd, 4th, and 5th. If they had more players good enough to play in the NHL, they’d have more players in the NHL. No one turns down playing in the most notable league in the world that pays the most money. The NHL is THE league in the world. It just happens to be in the USA.

And yes, to your point about not trying in international competition. USA basketball lost a few Olympics in a row in the early 2000’s. At the time only some rookies and B level guys were joining the team, and there wasn’t much effort put into pre-tournament practice. In 08, we decided we were done with losing, and most of our best players decided to play, and they actually had real team training and chemistry building leading up to the Olympics. It was called the redeem team and we absolutely dominated, beating almost every team by 30+ points.

There is something to be said about whoever has the most players in the premiere league. However, soccer is way more diluted in the sense that there’s other competitive leagues. There are plenty of good players who technically could play in the premiere league, but choose to play in the bundesliga, La liga, etc. Ronaldo is even playing in Saudi Arabia.

This isn’t the case with the NHL, NBA, or MLB. These are the best leagues in the world by far for their sport, and they pull from the world talent pool. If you’re good enough to make it, you play in the nhl, regardless of what country you are from. If you aren’t good enough, you choose to play in the Russia, Sweden, etc as a back up. These other leagues aren’t as good, and don’t have the money to pay players the way the nhl does. In soccer, teams outside of the premier league can lure players away with large contracts.

It’s very simple and you seem to not be able to grasp the difference just because it has the word “national” in the name. All of the best players in the world play in the NHL. Not all of the best soccer players in the premiere league.
