Interesting, first time I'm hearing about your personal life, SE Asia must be nice to retire in with the low COL.

I can tell you that currently I am working around 10 hours per week making good money, and I find that I have too much time. I'm basically living the lifestyle of a retired person, oddly. I don't like having so much time because I'm unmotivated to effectively use it. I feel that it's the same concept as having too much money; having too much money causes most people to value their money less and subsequently spend it in irresponsible ways. When I had a job that required a full 40 hours a week, I was much more mindful of my time and made the most of it.

I would say that the reason I don't want early retirement is that I believe in having a purpose to my life; not that a career as an engineer fulfills that purpose, but that there is likely a more interesting line of work that I might legitimately enjoy and be willing to devote my time towards. People like George Soros for example are still working in their 90s, and I somewhat envy that kind of life because they have something to keep them going. I hope to learn something that can get me deeply interested such that I never truly have the desire to retire.

If I had enough money to retire? I thought about this just yesterday. Let's say I won $20 million in the lottery. I would pay off all debts, take care of my family's debts, buy myself a nice place here in NYC, travel for a couple years, settle down with a wife and kids, and then - this is the hard part - what would I do? What reason would I have for waking up every day? That's the tough question.

I feel that only some kind of career can give me the motivation to keep going in life. Getting up so I can work on a hobby and just pass time leisurely is basically what I have now, and it's hell. Perhaps you are right that I need to build a more interesting life, but I just don't see hobbies or traveling or hanging out as a meaningful way to spend my latter years. There has to be something greater.

Electrical power, yea. Wouldn't know what business to start but I'm spending most of my time learning economics/finance and tech/programming over the next year or two.

It’s kinda funny to think that people from our countries go to Asia or Mexico or whatever to retire and live on the cheap while people from Asia or Mexico or whatever smuggle themselves into our countries in trailers and seacans and aircraft landing gear just so they can exist in a place where there is work and $$$
