Think hard about if you want to lug around an slr though, there is nothing magic or 'serious' about them anymore. I know so many people that have bought them over similar but more expensive mirrorless cameras and have never used them much because they can't be bothered carrying them. The best camera is one you will actually use and take with you.

You should invest in a shoulder strap. They all pretty much work the same so just pick one that you think looks good. Carrying the camera is night and day vs a neck strap.

https://luma-labs.com/products/cinch-2 My personal favorite because it's low profile and has two mounting points rather than one and adjusts very quickly.

CPS strap is nice too but a little gaudy.

So. Much. This.

I shot my first wedding a week ago and neck straps are the devil and I had the x-pro2 56mm hanging from my neck I can only imagine how damaging having a FF setup hanging from your neck could be.

I finally decided that my first camera will be a refurb'd Canon 70D off eBay–for around $600. Seems to be the best value. For that price, I don't mind eating the cost in a year or two to upgrade if its obsolete by then.

I put off buying it because I didn't want to have buyer's remorse now that mirrorless is a thing, and I wanted to do all my research first. But the more I hear you guys talk about the differences, the more I am drawn to DSLR's specifically because of their weight. I used a DSLR one time in my life, but I loved the experience. This might sound dumb, but if if the most appealing thing about mirrorless is that they're chic and portable, I would rather just use my iPhone. I want something rugged. A tool So it feels like I'm investing in a craft. Does that make any sense? Lol.

Lastly, do macs have any inherent advantages over PC's for photographers for any reason you guys can think of? I was going to sell all my apple tech because I need to invest back in PC's for work.

I like this shot a lot, not sure why.
You like that shot because it captured a genuine moment…

Remember - lenses are the secret sauce, a good camera helps, but glass is where it's at. I do all my editing in Lightroom, so you'd have basically the same experience there on a mac or windows machine.. can't attest to other tools.

Andromeda Galaxy(ies?)
f4.5, 135mm, 42 5s exposures stacked.
pleased enough to get this image with the equipment I have.

That bright star needs a vert/horiz type long armed flare thingy, but I dunno how to do it in GIMP.

What software did you use to stack the images and did you use a eq mount?

Heres my best shot at Andromeda wish I could have got some color.

Deepskystacker. Static mount.
The beauty of the software is that if there are enough bright stars in the shots it can use them as reference points to stack the frames.
I've found it actually works better when there's an appreciable pause between frames, so each one is definitely different from the last.
Tends to create startrails otherwise.

In on this thread. Picked up a Sony RX100 III yesterday. Ultimate travel camera. Wanted the best I could get for someone who clocks a couple hundred thousand miles flown a year and wont carry a camera case around (jacket/jeans pocket only). this thing is beautiful.

no idea what I'm doing but here's one of my first shots from a non smartphone camera.

Yeah it was a free shoot. I ended up doing engagement photos for my sister so it wasn't a total fail of a weekend.

Plus I shot with LieutenantGains and we had some pretty good photos

Pro IMO means you make a full time living off photography.

Hobbyist is what i would describe myself as. I probably make around 5-7% of my yearly income off photography.

You can be an amateur pro or hobbyist.

These days the distinction is pretty meaningless. There are plenty of 'pros' that are actually propped up by their other half's earning and don't run a serious business/career (see the wedding/portrait industry).

Conversely there are loads of talented amateurs who know in this day-and-age it is way easier to make a decent living doing something else and then shooting whatever they want and buying the latest gear without having to have a business need to justify it.

There are still a few areas where if you specialize you can carve out a very nice living.

Anyone can take a great photo and even with entry level gear it's never been easier to do that. However to me "pro" means being paid to consistently take great photos with no room for excuses.

If their $3500 camera and $2500 2.8 zoom lens hits the ground and is smashed to pieces they should be able to calmly pull another camera and lens out of their bag and continue shooting. If it rains they can keep shooting. No excuses for low light or focusing issues. They can pull out professional lighting gear and get beautiful portraits with the sun overhead. They get the key shots every time. If you can't do that and you're charging people as if you're a pro, GTFO.

The wedding industry is now saturated with weekend warriors who think a few months with a DSLR in their hands shooting friends' weddings with no pressure is enough experience to start charging strangers. "Sorry, I would have had a great shot of you and your father walking down the aisle but someone stepped out in front of me." "Sorry about those photos outside the church. The light was really harsh." "Sorry you can't see some people in that group shot, I didn't have a ladder." List goes on.

The other issue are the talented photographers with expensive gear doing it as a hobby who can deliver a professional result but charge peanuts or even worse give their work away because it's only a hobby. You have them to thank for people expecting photography to be free and that you'd be thrilled to spend a few hours taking photos for them for the experience/love of it/other BS reason.

hey boys. After seeing this picture for the 100th time i realized i might want to get an actual camera instead of using my iphone.

what would be a good camera to get that has a 70-100mm lens? just mainly wanting to take pictures of myself and friends/family. I could spend probably 300-400 dollars on something for now. will rep if you care about that kind of thing

Yeah, reminds me of a guy I know that specialises in property photography. He makes pretty decent money out of that.

He does branch out elsewhere and he's still pretty good with a camera, but some of his other shots, like those of land/cuityscapes are way too over-processed with saturation and sharpness that some of his photos look more like architect concepts where everything is CGI, the sky is super blue, grass is luminous green and super colourful, etc. Also adding obviously shopped lens flares. Or in his street photography people start having a light halo because of the amount of contast and sharpening applied.

That's one thing I've noticed a lot more since I've started messing around with DSLRs a bit more in the last year, how much goes into post-processing.
