Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had, but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.

There's honestly no bigger cope on this earth than how people try to rationalise these nukes. If one innocent American is killed by ISIS there's people literally crying on TV and demanding revenge. But 200,000 innocent Japanese murdered and decades of birth defects and radiation poisoning and it's all, "well their nation became economically successful afterwards so maybe these nukes were just the leg-up they needed!"
Shrug

If Japan nuked us then won the war I'm sure they'd write it as a moral necessity too

And maybe they'd be right

War is just inherently phucked up

Really? I watched the exact same documentary and thought "wow, the Ameribrahs didn't just mindlessly nuke and kill 140,000 people" the documentary made it out to be well justified. They warned Japan saying that they would bomb the fk out of them if they did not surrender, but the Japanese were insane and preparing for all out war. Training little girls to stab soldiers with sharpened sticks, really? Many more people would have died if the bomb wasnt dropped

Just lol if you don't think that a Soviet buildup in Asia and the impending Cold War weren't the drivers to use "the bomb" in Asia. Truman had a lot going on, and the least of his problems was the actual situation in Japan. He managed to justify the spending on Manhattan project, impress the Russians, and give Americans and Japanese one fine story they could go forward with all with one decision (i.e. drop the bombs).
Japan had an offered proposal of peace on the table when their ships left for Pearl Harbor, that hurt their "peace talks" credibility just a lil' bit, that and also their crazy kamikaze bullchit and consistently observed suicidal tendencies in the face of capture.

They had turned down unconditional surrender offers before we dropped the bombs, we warned them we had a next level bomb and were going to use it. IDGAF if they decided (too late) to start talking about how fukked they were as a nation only during/just after they pushed us to drop them. There was a lot of time before that, they left it too late.

The US called for the unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26 1945, the alternative being "prompt and utter destruction". While publicly stating their intent to fight on to the bitter end, Japan's leaders (the Supreme Council for the Direction of the War, also known as the "Big Six") were privately making entreaties to the still-neutral Soviet Union to mediate peace on terms more favorable to the Japanese

We are still using purple hearts today that were made in preparation for the invasion of mainland Japan. That chit would've been nasty for all parties involved and the Imperial Japanese were sneaky little fuks with a twisted moral/honor code.

Japan ruthlessly attacks china, Russia, and united states.

USA attacks Japan. Most evil people on the planet...

Indians's and Mayans kill and enslave their victims. No remorse for tribes that were taken over. Killing all men and taking women and children. Even eating their hearts for spiritual purpose.

USA takes over land and colonizes it. Most evil people on earth..... giving Indians's land and money which no Indian tribe will have ever done.

The reason I think they didn't want to do a mainland invasion, was the loss to American lives would be quite substantial.

You have to think.... the Japanese know there home how to take advantage of camouflage, hiding spots, areas to avoid etc. The Americans would be essentially going in blind.

The Americans found out that later in the Vietnam war on just how big geography can play into tactics.

Bombing given the circumstances was justifiable

The Japanese did disgusting things leading up to and during WWII. Absolute atrocities. Other posters have pointed it out but what they did in China alone is enough to justify destroying anything and anyone involved in and supporting their actions. If you potatoes want to cry about civilian casualties how about you cry for the 100% innocent civilians who were raped and murdered by the Japanese throughout Asia?

Why would we Americans put our own people through that type of **** when we could simply show our power by dropping two bombs and decimating two Japanese cities, cities with military bases and military manufacturing, cities of military importance, something that I didn't see any of the potatoes crying about the use of the bombs mention. These cities and the people living in them were part of the Japanese war machine that killed millions and millions of people throughout Asia. The same machine that attacked, unprovoked, America. The same machine that, if they had the capacity, would have invaded, raped and killed Americans in the same way that they raped and killed people throughout Asia.

Yeah. There's no reason for anyone to feel bad about using the bombs. They were completely justified. The Japanese were insane. They should be the ones who feel bad.

This is the really fuked up part. Japan was apparently willing to surrender under the condition that they keep their Emperor. Allies say "no," and bomb the cities. Then Japan surrenders under the condition that they keep their Emperor and America refers to it as an "Unconditional Surrender."

One thing I've learned is there is no good and evil.. we can all be evil when pushed to any extreme. The bomb may have been justifiable but the moral question of whether it was right or wrong depends entirely on the persons subjective moral compass.

I heard the pilot that off loaded one bomb committed suicide years later.

Yes, in the short term, it was the right decision.

In the long term? That's a different story. Yes, we haven't used nukes again due to their destructive nature, but that does not mean that they will not continue to be used. Only 70 years has passed. One measly human life time. That does not mean that it won't happen in the future. If humanity wipes itself out with nukes a 100 years from now, then no, it would not have been worth it.

It also set up a precedent for the U.S. intentionally attacking civilian targets, including women and children. People get caught up in the numbers, Pearl Harbor, and the many atrocities that the Japanese military committed (which, unlike the Nazis, they never paid for). What is often willfully ignored is that civilians, including little kids, were targeted and either vaporized in an instant or forced to suffer horrible deaths under radiation. Pearl Harbor, while an act of aggression, was an attack on a military base. Not the same thing.

Anyways, there's no real black and white answer for this.

killing/murdering over 240k innocent people was fukced up. imagine, half of them were probably children too. the US didn't have to drop them to win the war; japan was withering away since the fuel embargoes and naval blockades left them w/o anything to fuel their ships/planes. it was just a matter of time before they surrendered.

if anything, the US could have had a show of force and dropped the bombs in a less densely populated area to show they had the power to wipe them off the face of the earth or in the outskirts of a city.

And? I'm Korean. I have no love for the Japanese and I'm quite aware of the horrible things the they did. And unlike the Germans, many in Japan still don't acknowledge any of it. Many politicians and historians over there make an active effort to rewrite history in order to deny their atrocities and justify their aggression by saying that they did it for the good of Asia in order to protect it from Western imperialism. Yes, they're really doing that.

But let's not say that it was morally justified to target a civilian city filled with the elderly, women, and children. Was it a smart military/political move? Perhaps. But it wasn't morally justified by any means. The kids certainly didn't deserve it.

What's ironic about everyone saying that the Japanese deserved it is that they're forgetting that...

This. Japanese war criminals were never tried as war criminals. And it was an American decision. And America was quite complicit in ignoring that many atrocities that the Japanese government/military committed. So yes, let's keep going on about how the Japanese were punished by the nukes when in reality the worst Japanese war criminals were actually pardoned.
