Zoo's shouldn't house animals too large for their capacity in the first place. A silver back gorilla isn't meant to live in isolation.Definitely it would be risk use tranquilizer so close to kid. Who know how would gorilla behave for second or two.

update
The small child said he wanted to get in the water before the incident, to which the mother, who was also watching several other children, replied: 'No, you're not, no, you're not,' according to one witness Kim O'Connor.
O'connor told WLWT she heard the boy talking about getting into the water before she heard a splash, followed by frantic yelling once onlookers realized he was inside the enclosure.
A video emerged on Saturday revealing some of the chilling moments Harambe was dragging the boy in the water, although more graphic portions were cut from the footage.
The panicked bystanders may have aggravated the tense situation, according to O'Connor, who said: 'I don't know if the screaming did it or too many people hanging on the edge, if he thought we were coming in, but then he pulled the boy down away further from the big group.'
In the video that emerged on Saturday, a woman can be heard yelling, 'Mommy's right here...mommy loves you,' and before saying 'Isaiah be calm,' when the boy started crying.

Everything about this situation sucks.
I'm not a parent so I'm just asking.
Parents: You really haven't lost track of your little guy for a few seconds in a public place and had that moment of panic? My dad said he lost track of me when I was little at a movie theater for like 3 seconds. Shook some guys hand, turned around and I was gone.
Maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me as a non-parent that, if you're honest, most parents probably have a couple public incidents like this where you lose track for just a few seconds.
As far as shooting him in that situation, I can't see how that's really up for debate. 3 seconds and that kid doesn't have a head. Miscers talking about the chimp body language like he was for sure going for a cuddle or something are lol.
TLDR: Everything about this situation sucks, RIP gorilla.

Sad that it had to be killed, I would have thought they'd have tranquilisers for this kind of situation. And yes the parents are stupid. But the little kid doesn't deserve to die for it. Humans come first

The mother may deserve a punishment, but shooting them is not something to joke about.
