Waited an hour to get unbanned to neg OP.

Anyways as people mentioned, Ali was a product of his environment. Some blacks were taught the Christian "turn the other cheek / forgiveness" route of the time. Others were staunch Muslims and felt that black nationalism was the way to fight oppression and inequality in America. He wasn't a perfect man. His ideas of separatism were mostly of what he saw growing up, being segregated, coming home winning Gold in the Junior Olympics and not being able to eat in a white restaurant. Also of course the influence of the NOI.

People talk down on the NOI but people like Ali, Malcolm X, Farrakhan have tried to inspire the black conscious in a time where blacks were treated as subhuman, second class citizens. They did not yearn for acceptance by whites because they felt that they had a right to exist and live their lives like anyone else.

At the time Ali draft dodging was unpopular, but when history looks back he absolutely did what he thought was right in his heart, stuck to his moral compass and fell on his sword, suffered the consequences for it. How many men can say they have done that in their lives?

He didn't hate whites, he hated white supremacy. Even in talk shows with whites hosting, the audience could see that he was quick witted and charismatic. He did not harbor any hatred for anyone. He was a humanist in his own right and fought on many fronts, fighting Parkinson's, philanthropy work in Africa, and also speaking up for Muslim Americans. He was a great man and a true American.

He agreed with White supremacy ideals of not mixing race so he was just the other side of the coin from them but Black. NOI and White Supremacy groups have the same outlook they want their race to dominate and stay "pure".

That's separatism and I'm well aware of his views. Given the climate of the 60s and racial tensions it wouldn't have been uncommon for that. It's hard to always be on the right side of justice in volatile times. At the time he did think white men were the devil and that many people were not righteous. Again I never said he was perfect.

FWIW his radical views changed and in 1975 converted to Sunni Islam and these are some of his grandchildren

Do all you white brahs expect all blacks to be "YESS MASSA WE FORGIVE YOU" in the 60s when you could get curb stomped for being on the wrong side of town for being black?

Also I forgot the Aussies are on at this hour. That's all that's needed to be said.

How are they not disproven? He was black nationalist but he wasn't racist.

I agree that some of the NOI beliefs are pretty twisted but really what drew Ali to Islam was brotherhood. He talked about meeting world leaders and having access to that brotherhood in that.

I also stated he became a Sunni Muslim after the 60s so clearly his views were in conflict with the NOI core beliefs.

As much as internet racists on the misc piss me off I could only imagine how I'd be if I lived in the 60s lmao.

He was an inspirational character who overcame huge odds to become arguably the most charismatic and respected athlete in the history of sport.

Anyone who doesn't see that is either trolling or a *******.

you're honestly telling me a white person could be a white nationalist but not seen as racist...?

you're honestly telling me a white person could be apart of the kkk and not be classed racist...?

for god sakes, the religion he followed and promoted said all whites are evil and that blacks are superior to all...

brb, i'll join the kkk and other racist organisations and then leave and claim i ain't racist. Even though i followed it for 20 years...

Well...any semblance of white pride and white nationalism has been royally ****ed by white supremacy for the past 100 years lmao. Also KKK you're right was separatist but they were also a ****ing terrorist organization, anti-black, anti-Catholic, anti-Irish, anti-Italian, anti-Immigration group so comparing them to the NOI a religious organization isn't the same.

There are 'moderate' white separatists at the time just like any other group and Ali agreed with them.

But I know you're just arguing semantics and overall being a ******* and totally ignoring the fact that someone can change their views and beliefs 40+ years later.

No, he wasn't a saint.

As for the draft dodging, it's always people who know the least about history who talk the most ****. But then again you think the world is flat, so yeah.

It was well known at the time that he was given a deal in which he would never have had to see a day of combat. It was the Joe Louis deal in which he would've gone around fighting exhibition matches for the entertainment of the troops. Instead of choosing this cushy job he decided to risk imprisonment and have his belt taken away. It's amazing that people forget about this "little" detail.

does That change what white nationalism/pride truely is? do people take that into account? ... no.
It doesn't change the fact that they will always be seen as racist.

kkk uses the bible to promote white supremacy
NOI uses the koran to promote black supremacy

The same time when Jim Crow laws were active. And most importantly why would anybody risk their life for a pointless war?

So you dislike Ali for standing up for his rights but you praise George Washington that same guy who promoted slavery and wore high heels?

I hate it when people bring politics into sport. Muhammad Ali was not a politician nor was he interested in politics. There is a clear reason why he refused to go to a war back then. It's not like he refuse to go for being "lazy".
