Having lived and worked in the UAE for the past 2 years here is my 2 cents:

Monarchy is loved by the people, but then again they have actually used their wealth for the betterment of their people, unlike some African countries where one leader hoards everything at the expense of their people.

The vision of their king is amazing, from a desert to a thing out of a fantasy all in a space of a few decades.

Yes this place is built on cheap labour (slave labour), but you are a fool to think the US and the UK where i'm from is not built on the backs of slaves, be it centuries ago.

Ridiculously hot, but get paid more than double what I would in the UK as a teacher, so will tolerate the pain.

A lot of my native students drive better cars at 16 then I probably will ever drive in my life.

Labourers are paid around 600 dollars a month, but thats 600 more than bangledesh or India. Conditions are at best terrible, I do really feel sorry for them, but they seem happy when I speak to them privately

Natives literally have won the lottery at birth, but money doesnt always buy happiness, my students crave the opportunity to live in London, where i am from.

Every local I have met is super nice, generous and welcoming. I have experienced no racism here as a black man and no where near as much as back home in London, arguably one of the most multicultural citites in the world

My main issue with this place, is the absolutely soulless nature of the people, every expat here is in the single pursuit of money and a lifestyle, naturally they are soul less in their very nature. In London I would meet a real character, with real struggles and a great story, this place is absolutely soul less, i crave meaningful relationships and friends who are not obessesed with money.

There's bad **** like this in every society and country in the world. You're just mad these brahs "made it" without having to work too hard, i.e the american "dream." A lot of the laborers aren't treated very well but they make a lot more money than they would sitting in their village in india or bangladesh. Some do get tricked into going over without realizing exactly what they are getting into but it is in no way comparable to slaughtering the native indigenous peoples of a country and shipping in people from across the world and then buying and selling them like cattle. A lot of the laborers are extremely poor and uneducated, they would achieve nothing by staying home, at least by going overseas and working they can send some money back home which can be used to buy some small land and start a farm and/or send their children to school in hopes that they don't end up like them. It's very hard for most people to understand how this works unless you've actually lived in one of the gulf countries and worked in construction and worked with these people first hand.

I've been there - it's soul-less, tasteless, culture-less, tacky, excessive flaunting of wealth.
