As a watch enthusiast, I've given up trying to debate with the "what's the point of an expensive watch when you can tell the time with your phone?" people. It's such a closed-minded argument that completely ignores the thousands of things people spend money on that are arguably unnecessary or could be replaced with something far cheaper.

People like different sh*t from you ffs. Why even open a thread specifically about watches?

There are many unnecessary things, but few are as useless as a watch. A fancy car is usually more comfortable than a cheaper car, more expensive clothes are made with better materials up to a point. The most expensive watch in the world is still just a watch. If you're wealthy, do what you will, but if you're a poverton like OP, why pretend? Why not move out of your father's basement and build a life for yourself instead.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

A good watch is both a marvel of engineering, and a work of art. Vintage watches/classic models are also a part of history. The speedmaster that I mentioned in this thread is also known as the moon watch, because it was worn on the moon by astronauts, as a legitimate tool. This was long before it was seen as a flashy piece of jewelry. The Patek nautilus (and even more so the AP royal oak) were famously designed in a hurry, by a watchmaker who hated the idea of keeping time. These models altered the course of the Swiss watch industry during the quartz crisis by completely changing how people see watches. Watches have been developed for war, flight, diving, racing, sports, and plenty of other endeavors thoughout history.

Some people put down money for art, like paintings or sculptures. Some collect historical artifacts. Some people appreciate great mechanics and well designed machines. A great watch is often all of these things in one. It's only a waste to people who have no passion for it.

Maybe as useless as a reproduction of a painting as opposed to the original?

Exactly, I buy my cars in the most muted and understated color, because that serves a purpose. Tbh you're right. About making my mind up. Not about bragging.

It's quite a personal goal to own a Breitling one day. I really love the brand and engineering and hand-crafted beauty which goes into making them.

Plus the link to aviation has such a rich and interesting history.

That's why I can't get an Omega for the same price
