The lines to buy ammo are worse than the lines to buy toilet paper, but the media isnt show that, hmmmmm.

Wife is going to her CCW class tonight.
Went out to BigR yesterday to get dog food. Ammo shelves were pretty bare. Mostly 45acp left which was kinda surprising.

A 357 revolver is the best choice if you can have 1 gun and a multi-caliber gun is always better during ammo shortages. Load up heavy, solid 357s for hunting bigger game like deer or for bear defense (not the best but not the worst for bear) and it can reach out to 100 yards. The 125gr 357 mag JHP is about the best self defense round ever against humans and a 158 or 125 gr hollowpoint 38special at +p will do almost as well. And solid 38specials will kill small game for food without blowing it to pieces like a 357mag. Bullet shape doesn't affect a revolver like it will a 9mm so you can shoot whatever you can find from flat points, fmj, round lead, hollowpoint or wadcutters.

Period.
Period.
Your 80 year old guy/gal with reduced strength that might have trouble loading magazines or working a slide due to arthritis. A revolver requires very little strength to load/unload. A revolver could definitely be the better choice for that group. The church I attend allows CCW. Four of the ushers are Korean war vets. They all carry snubby revolvers for that exact reason.
Look at your basic apartment dweller. Has very high chance of a round going into a neighboring apt. You can easily throw soft lead, reduced velocity or even frangible rounds into a cylinder to reduce that risk. Can't with a 9mm.
So there's three instances right there not including people who are just more comfortable with a revolver or the ability to change grips on a revolver to literally any shape, which can't be done with a 9mm. I don't shoot Glocks for that reason. I respect their reliability, but I've never held a Glock that fit well in my hand and that undermines confidence.
Then you add the fact that every 9mm defensive round on the planet has tried to reach the "stopping power" level of the 125 gr JHP 357 mag. Every. Single. One. So in terms of hits on target, some would rather put the 357mag into someone than a 9mm that tries to hit as hard.
Telling someone that one type of gun is better than another "period" is irresponsible and makes as little sense as telling someone that one type of vehicle is better than another "period".

I'll have a lot more fun with it when my can comes in, since this will likely end up being my main home defense piece.

It's nice of you to point out that the 357 Mag with its larger case volume has better ballistics. This is irrelevant. The 9mm cartridge has adequate terminal ballistics for its purpose, is easy/affordable to train with, and has (generally) much greater ammo availability in terms of cost.
There is a reason that not one police agency in the US issues revolvers anymore. If you can't work the slide on a typical semiauto handgun, you should probably learn to grab the slide overhand and use your triceps on each arm instead of slingshotting the slide. That's not the gun's fault, it's a training issue.
TLDR; unless you're 1000 years old or have some kind of horrible deformity with your hands, a 9mm semi-auto handgun is the choice for a defensive pistol. Possible exception for using .380 if you absolutely must have a micro pistol for deep concealment.

The design is an Imperial Aquila.

So your first example is someone neglecting their equipment, your second example is 2% of the population and 0% of this board, and your third example is blatantly false. drywall will not stop even soft lead, and you shouldn't be using frangible ammo for self defense.

Anyways, back to the point. You used a blanket statement that was false and is irresponsible to use in the real world. You're obviously a casual shooter and that's fine, but no one type of gun is better than another "period" as you said. I gave examples of populations where a 9mm may not be the better choice over a revolver, refuting your blanket statement. If you want to do mental gymnastics to move the goalposts to apply your statement only to this forum, go ahead. A semi auto is probably best for the police, you're right. Not sure where that entered the conversation though. And fyi, even most police wouldn't choose a 9mm if it weren't for female officers needing a smaller group frame. It's a compromise.
Saying this type of gun is better "period" is just like telling someone that they should be driving one type of vehicle "period", without taking their actual needs into consideration. It's a false statement and irresponsible to say.

So you're obviously unaware of the multiple kinda of frangible self defense ammo. I wasn't talking the usual compressed powder stuff you shoot on steel. Any ammo designed to break apart is frangible, whether it be in the body or hitting steel.

Anyone who uses blanket statements like that regarding guns, cars, tools, cooking gadgets, whatever it is, shows themselves to be an amateur or enthusiast. You wouldn't take the blanket statement that "SUVs are better than sedans for families. Period." seriously if someone said it, nor should anyone take the statement "9mm is better than a revolver for self defense. Period"." seriously either.
I showed several examples of populations for whom that blanket statement may not apply, thus debunking the blanket statement. You seem to not be able to accept having that blanket statement debunked and are trying to use whatever mental gymnastics you can think of, to the point where you're accusing me of making an "assertion" I never even made. You're the only one in this conversation who actually made an assertion.
