When you gear up for a trip like this, what are you bringing for self defense or is it needed? Any chance of getting stalked or attacked?

Thin ice and cutting/ injuring yourself are the much bigger threats.
I generally always bring a scoped .22 mag, but even it doesn't really justify its weight. Grouse season is closed, and snaring rabbit is much more efficient.
Plus, on this trip we are trapping and butchering and eating beaver, so that's way better.
I may bring a small folding .22, but only if I decide to set some wolf foothold traps. You need something to dispatch them if you get one.

Nice.
Different question. Best way to trap squirrels? I have occasional issues and I have used the small cage traps but rather than release them I hit them with a pellet in the head. Only resort to that when they are being destructive.

Make sure the rat traps are new ish too. Our red squirrels aren't huge, but a bigger one would push the limits of humane dispatch in a weak trap.
If they get tagged and not caught they can be a bitch to catch, and a good air rifle is the only way then.
Set it in such a way that they approach from the right direction. Occasionally they will sit on the trap and it will just fling them off and educate them to avoid traps

I tried the Victor traps when they were tearing up my shed and they would always manage to get the bait and set the trap off without being caught. It turned out to be two and I had to cage and then shoot both.
I have a decent air rifle with a scope and I can hit within an inch from 50 yds away. Usually when they are on the trees near my shed I'll shoot the tree right near them to scare them off. Right now I have one in my outdoor enclosed porch so I'd rather avoid shooting if I can. These are grey squirrels and pretty big.

Any recommendations for snow shoes? I see you're using traditional. I've tried a newer pair but never traditional. Still love the idea of those vs modern style if all things equal.

You will also see the webbing is not traditional. It is 300 and 600 lb monofilament net material. Knocks of slush better, is still light, and incredibly durable.
My main snowshows for shorter distance, heavy bush, or not as deep snow are cabelas 9x36 modern shoes.
I wear them trapping more only because they are tough. Traditionals and the bindings I use are better suited to mukluks, whereas modern shoes are better suited to modern footwear.
I might do a video showing the bindings and how slick they are.

Currently uploading a test video while I was driving today for work.
Just trying to get comfortable with talking at a damn camera. Criticism encouraged. You can also use it as a drinking game every time I say Ummm, or ahh...lol. you'll be hammered by the 3 min mark.
Anyway, hope it finishes uploading ok soon.
Stand by.

In your opinion what really killed the fur trade? Was it the loss of appetite for wearing furs? Major trend in fashion changes? Or is there even a simple answer to it?

Its not even incredibly remote, and there are seasonal cottages here all over the place on the water. But when they all leave, the place goes back to as if they arent even there at all.
Just a few hundred people in town, next biggest town is a half hr drive and is fewer than 8000 people.
You can go out in the bush for days and not see another person and only 2.5 hrs from Toronto.
And that rainbow trout was about the best I have made.

My channel is going to be called "After Work Outdoors".
I bust my ass to do all the stuff I do after hours, on weekends, and in free time.
I do nuisance animal control in the summer for cottagers and homeowners. When fur prices were good you could clear eight to ten grand a year for doing what you like.
In terms of a business, guiding, forestry, etc are pretty decent lines of work.
I grew up doing this stuff because I just did those things..and pursued them. I also did four years in a university program called Outdoor Adventure Leadership. Basically a BA in camping, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, winter camping, rock climbing, etc.
it was a fun four years.
As for your situation, I suggest you think about what you are passionate about, what you are good at and enjoy doing and learn everything there is to know about it. become proficient at it...and see where it goes.
I just happen to do that naturally and go full throttle at everything I do.
And thats good and bad too. lol

Just got back from a week of winter camping and trapping off snowshoe.
Guided this trip with a group of people who wanted to experience life on a trapline using only human power, and checking and setting traps on snowshoe.
Butchered and ate beaver, and rabbit. The second part of the course is going on now and is brain tanning, and making soap and other things out of the animals we got.
Beaver is delicious, and a good time was had by all. I took way more video than pics. Getting an editing computer tomorrow to get the footage together.
