I grew up in the midwest. White as can be. I moved to CA 12 years ago and now live about 30 miles north of LA in a mainly white and Asian city.
I visited NYC 6 years ago for what was supposed to be 5 days. I literally paid extra money to change my plane ticket home because I COULD NOT STAND THE PLACE.
I felt very unsafe. There were tons and tons of homeless....poor....and crazy people. I didn't at all feel as if I was in the USA unless I was at a wealthy bar or restaurant. If you were walking down the street you could have told me I was almost any city in the world and I would have believed you. Lots and lots of different nationalities. And everything was dirty. Just plain dirty.
I hated everything about NYC and it is by far the worst city I have ever seen and this is coming from someone who can't stand Los Angeles for many of the same reasons.
Words to live by...."You're at the shopping mall with your girl but a hot chick walks by. Are you going to look at the hot girl? No. You use your peripheral vision."

But it's kinda hard when they follow you round the subway calling out your name (overheard me and daughter talking) or come up to you begging for money and just keep bugging you even though you're ignoring them..
In most countries that would practically never happen in the first place, let alone multiple times in one evening.
Maybe it's different for you, you're male after all and look strong etc. Is terrifying for a female tho. By the time we got to our hotel I was just grateful we hadn't been actually robbed or worse.
To be fair, we haven't had as many issues walking round in the daytime. It is mostly at night.

- so many people yet you're still anonymous because no one notices you due to such large crowds

Many of the posters on this forum LARP about living in NYC - maybe they did once, or had a friend who did, but pretending like NYC is worse today than it was say in 2004 is just lulzy. Park Slope in 2002 anyone? Look at it today.
Most of my friends/colleagues hate it. I know a couple that make around 370k (gross) each, who moved to CT back during the riots when NYC's idiotic mayor ordered the police to stand down. The price of their apartment in midtown bought them a nice house in a great school area in CT. So the folks ITT crying about 'the USA' are dumb. They just don't get NYC.
I love NYC. But now that we are going to have a kid, I'm also thinking of just selling (at my convenience and advantage) NYC assets and moving somewhere else too. My '26 year old clubbing and smashing a girl in her parents' apartment on the balcony while it is still under construction' are gone. Time for security, and for my kid to not grow up in a place like this.
But my kid can come later and feast on NYC, as I feasted here, and get a lot out of the city too. It isn't 'all bad'.

But real reason I'm here is I promised my daughter I'd take her to New York as a reward for passing university, and couldn't break my promises.

The biggest mistake people in NYC made was trying to raise families there, people buying 3 apartments to combine. We moved out after our second kid, but having one baby in NYC is actually a lot of fun. My wife and I are absolutely thinking about moving back once the kids move out.

I left New York early into Covid after 8 years glad it appears it was the right decision.
I miss the good times I had. Especielly from
