Save a lot of $$ and do it yourself. It is also a nice way to make $$ on the side if you are near an art school. So easy.

I've shot film in every format for 6+ years pre-digital inc. developing with all sorts of esoteric devs and printing it. I am so glad to see the back of it but the medium and large format cameras are interesting to use.

Anyway lomo as far as I know is some hipster ******* thing, whereas ilford is a legit b&w film company. Don't sent it to a lab or they WILL butcher it, develop it yourself it is easy and cheap. Otherwise shoot b&w that can go though colour machines like ilford xp2.

Well when I started it was all there was. Ilford all the way. I did some really great b/w with that dark room is was awesome.

Not really sure what you would get out of shooting analog now. It's also really expensive.

Which is kind of the point: it forces you to plan and think, (rather than just clicking away hoping you capture something worthwhile), before you shoot. For that reason the better film (motion) schools also start you off this way.

I do see some composition issues (sky/horizon), but nothing that can be fixed in post.

I'm looking at this as a product shot. I think you need a greater depth of field so the entire glass is in focus and sharp. The back left edge of the glass and back of the top ice cube look blurry to me. I would also add some edge lighting to clearly define the glass. Right now the top quarter of the glass disappears into the background. The light isn't centered over the glass causing an oblong shadow. I don't like how the spot light is cut off by the edge of the surface you shot on, as well as too tight of a crop. The shot needs to allow for someone to easily be able to add negative space in any direction. The glass is also slightly off center.

Conceptually, I like what you thought up. Real ice doesn't give you a very long working time, so I'm sure you were hurrying along. I also don't see any finger prints, smudges, or other nonsense. Considering that you likely weren't interested in spending a few hours setting everything up, I like what you did. Hopefully the challenge goes well for you.

Ted Forbes (The Art of Photography) has a good series on composition. Unfortunately as of late he's gotten into the gear shilling game. Plus his ego has been growing out of control and the quality of his videos has significantly dropped.

thanks.
I had 20 minutes to come up with a concept, shoot, process and upload. I hear you about the light alignment, it bugged me, too. light fall off on the right is due to surface ending. that's a narrow stool that glass is sitting on.

Definitely a good job for 20 minutes. There's been numerous times where I've taken shots thinking I'd killed it, only to take a look on the computer and realize I've got to go redo things. Sometimes that will happen multiple times. I've got problems keeping things clean and free of dust.

my $1500 setup i picked up. Local studio closing, liquidated by bank with in person auction.

only downside is 178,000 shutter count.

That's already above average, but like any middle point its possible to way beyond that.
