Thinking about selling all my current gear and buying the Sony A7R2. Thing looks impressive. I'd only have enough money left over for their cheap 50mm lens, but fuk it. I can build slowly.

That depends on what and how you want to edit. Lightroom and Photoshop are the two most popular programs, but there are other alternatives.

Does Canon have their own free raw software? Otherwise checkout GIMP for a free open source alternative to Photoshop (if you need to post process and just getting into it, PS is too expensive imo).

It has been out a while and sony replace cameras so damn fast you may be best waiting. Lenses are mad expensive too, right now a D810 with sigma art primes is a much cheaper option.

Seems unremarkable. But I suppose sometimes, there's more to a photographer than meets the eye.

I don't, but I can free the animal from that pesky cage if you'd like. Most of it anyway.

I shoot with the tamron 150-600 on a 7dmkii.

960 effective focal length can get you pretty close.

Some owls are more tolerant than others. Snowies are the most skittish. Just have to approach very slowly. Most times I shooting from inside the car to avoid scaring them off.

I generally use ebird.org and go to species map to see where the recent sightings have been.

But mostly, just connect with your local birding community. People share bird locations all the time privately. So a hunting owl can sometimes be in the same area for awhile. That Great gray owl in particular was in that spot for a month. Tons of people in my city was able to get good shots of it since it didn't mind people at all.

I drove about 300-400km total for that snowy owl on the weekend.

Damn, 150-600 for around $1,000 doesn't seem all that bad. May have to save up for one. I shoot alot less wildlife since switching to DSLR, birds especially.

Should probably start taking the back roads to work, rural Illinois, should be able to spot more that way.

Never heard of ebird before, looks very useful, thanks for the share! Also joined a few local FB groups, hope to get some leads from them.

Anyone know how to get the shutter count on a 5D3? From what I'm gathering the only way to do it is to ship it off to Canon which seems silly.

Mac, though I can find a Windows laptop for this. I remember when I had a 50D it was easy to get shutter count.

Hope it works for you.

With Nikon it's in plain view so I just use an EXIF viewer. Not sure why Canon has to make it difficult.
