Mayweather is a very cautious fighter. He had never seen Connor box and he was always going to be a bit awkward to to not being a professional, but as Mayweather nearly always does, he figures out everything about his opponent in the first few rounds and then just controls the fight from there. He probably could have tried going for a knock out from the get go but that has never been his way, he will always take the approach that will guarantee the win. Ofc he can't box, why would he try to learn how to out box someone who has done it their whole life, there was no time for that. He had to first learn the rules of boxing, try and last 12 rounds (which he also failed at) all while trying to make his current striking techniques work in a boxing format. He failed and lost.
