im trying to go off for the summer to learn 2 years of russian in 2.5 months. all paid for. 6hrs a day in class 5x/week

You are supposed to show up with 0 knowledge. It's a program offered to ROTC cadets and Russian is a language I wanted to learn someday. The most i've done was 2 years of Spanish in HS. Not sure how far along this amount of training will get me but i'd like to be easy to have a conversation with in Russian.

Eventually i want to teach myself a language in some way and i think this will provide me a good foundation for doing so

I totally agree
Start doing some basic stuff now - other than making it easier on yourself when you start doing it but it will also give you the work ethic to keep it going. You will learn a lot in those cram sessions but no where near being fluent. Only thing that can get you at the 2.5 years worth of work is to study every day for 2.5 years.
Plenty of people move abroad to the country where they want to learn the language and go to school 5 days a week learning the language for a year and some of them still can’t speak properly. It’s what you do with that knowledge outside of that class. Gotta continue learning and studying on your own

Well, it is 2 years of college course work in that time frame. 100a/b, 200a/b. 30 hours of class/week, 3-4 hrs/week with a language partner. and 10-15 self study/homework hours /week.

I'm hoping i get accepted. What do you all recommend to learn before i get there? And what level would you expect me to be at the end of this? Watch a show with no captions and understand at least the general concept of what they're saying?

I see what you mean now, 2 years of college coursework, not the the equivalent of learning a language for 2 years.

Even people doing the course for 2 years, will likely do a lot of media and literature reading for pleasure, in the language they are learning. So would be getting far more exposure to the language outside of the course, plus it takes time for the brain to store things like vocabulary and grammar into long term memory for automatic recall.

W1LLOW and another brah ITT are using Pimsleur Russian. Which you can get from a library to download to your PC.

Duolingo Russian (desktop verison > app version) is a free option to back up the Pimsleur.

I know that (check out the first post ITT) Russian is a challenging language for English speakers, so I don't know how long it would be for you to get to an A2 level (upper beginner) in the language.

I'm french and i'm learning english, I'll probably take a class end of 2019 or 2020 to get a level because I never study, just read books and use the american internet ALL the time.
I also study brittonic (celtic local language) because I live in Brittany and my ancestry is from here.
Great thread, anyone speaks a celtic language?

skipped all foreign language learning yesterday and felt crappy for it. I came back to it today and I find myself in a strange position. Russian is currently kicking my ass so much, I've actually increased my attention to French improvement. I've lived in Paris for awhile, made friends and improved tremendously. I'd say I'm very close to fluent but I'm not native.

I just forgot how much of a grind learning a language is when you're still trying to train your muscles to execute the words properly, let alone put them together in the correct order grammatically so that they make sense.

Pimsleur Russian 1 Lesson 25:Won't even be able to move on to 26 tomorrow. 25 owned me good today. There's so many hard sounding syllables that fly out like a snare drum roll but they're mixed with gooey French-esque liasons. It's like putting German and French in a blender then you get Russian. I recorded 20 seconds of today's lesson just so you can get an idea of this chit.

Yesterday and today where very little studying. I ran through my flash cards and added 16 new words from yesterday and today. Did a 20 hour shift yesterday and was exhausted today to do much. But I opened the decks and got about 30 mins in both times. Also watched some YouTube videos in Chinese and was happy picking up words and sentences throughout. Tomorrow is back on the grind for atleast 2 hours

I’m happy I did the flashcards these 2 days. It really reinforces the words when read daily even if it’s only a few mins.

it sucks missing a day but that's what most people who try to learn a language don't understand. It's like lifting weights after not lifting for 6 months. Everything is gonna hurt, it's gonna feel hard as fuk for weeks. But if you get 6 weeks of consistency, you start getting muscle(mouth) memory, starts becoming habit and you for real start internalizing the language.

I'm looking forward to how far along I'll be come Valentine's Day-ish. Unfortunately most of the people that posted in the first 2 pages either already gave up or never even started. Keep the grind alive brah.

das it mane. I experienced this in French. first start listening to news in your target language since they talk proper and pronounce everything clear. then you can start venturing into some tv series. then it's the street slang (native) level which is obviously the most difficult level to achieve.

Yeh, watching the news is definitely a good idea. I'm learning proper Spanish first but damn, I didn't notice how many people use slang. Everyone around me uses slang so they laugh when I say some words the "proper" way lol. The only time I heard people speaking proper Spanish was when I went to Spain (Madrid). It's gonna be a rough year learning but I'm definitely excited to see how much I can learn when I actually try my azz off.

Can confirm. in French "please" is "Si'l vous plaît." So the first time I was in a French city I was wondering why people kept clowning me every time I said "sil voo play". That's because they use "Si'l te plaît (informal)" which simply sounds like "silt play" yet my dumbass was running around SIL VOO PLAY. cringe.

Want to throw this out there for anyone grinding through pimsleur, Michel Thomas, or any other structured program. Definitely possible to get burnt out on one type of method or practice. If you feel like you're hitting a wall, and lacking drive, switch things up to keep the process flowing.

I couldn't bare to sit through a monotonous 30 minute "listen and repeat" lesson of pimsleur today so I bust out this youtube series that transcribes the news. It's good for developing the ear. I understand 80% of each of these videos but when I catch a phrase or word I don't know I pause it and run it through the translator. After that I use the word/phrase 10 times myself outloud to help solidify it to memory. So yeah, I won't progress in a pimsleur lesson today but this is definitely active practical use study.

That’s why I like watching YouTube podcasts or series. They use up to date language. On my main books that I use the new practical Chinese readers thy use proper prahses and words that no one uses anymore.

Most of what I’m learning is not out of date, it’s just that some of the words/phrases are not used in the area I’m in. The only way to learn the “street slang” is to just talk to more of my mexican friends near me lol.

I remember hearing lots of words when I went to Spain last year that aren’t spoken near me :P.

I’m constantly listening to the radio and listening to music so that helps me a lot.

listened looking at sub titles. then listened without looking at sub titles. then wrote down everything i still wasn't catching in a note book (about 3 pages worth). took about an hour and a half. great at stacking vocab tho
